  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Ever since I was a child, my boundless curiosity has driven me to explore and learn about the world around me. As I grew older, this curiosity led me to pursue sociology, where I could investigate and understand the invisible forces that shape human behaviour. I fell in love with the subject during my first year of my BA, and since then, I have been passionate about sharing my knowledge with others.

My interest in private tutoring grew out of my experiences as both a teacher and a student. As an educator in higher education, I saw first-hand the struggles that students face as they navigate the academic system. This inspired me to think about how I could support students more effectively, and I began to think of offering private tutoring services to help students overcome the challenges they face.

During my time studying abroad at Sorbonne University in Paris, I realized how valuable a dedicated tutor can be in guiding students through the complexities of a new academic world. Later, as an academic myself, I have had the privilege of supervising numerous dissertations and supporting hundreds of students in achieving their academic goals.
For me, private tutoring is more than just a job - it's an opportunity to build meaningful relationships with students and help them reach their full potential.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

As a sociologist and media scholar, I am incredibly passionate about the topics that fall under the umbrella of these fields. Whether it's discussing the latest social media trends, analysing the impact of technology on society, or exploring the power dynamics at play in different social contexts, I find that there is never a shortage of fascinating topics to delve into.

When it comes to teaching, I particularly enjoy working with students on developing their research methods and writing skills. One of my favourite things is helping students craft a strong thesis or essay, from the initial brainstorming stage all the way through to the final draft. It's incredibly rewarding to see students grow in their ability to express themselves and their ideas in a clear, concise, and compelling way.

Additionally, I am always eager to support my students in their career development. Whether they're looking to apply to graduate programs, land a job in the media industry, or pursue another path entirely, I'm here to offer guidance and support every step of the way. From crafting a killer cover letter to fine-tuning a resume, I'm here to help my students put their best foot forward.

Of course, there are some topics that I find less interesting or engaging than others. However, I firmly believe that every topic has the potential to be fascinating and engaging if approached with an open mind and a willingness to learn.
Ultimately, my goal as a tutor is to help my students develop a deep and lasting passion for the subject matter, so that they can continue to explore and learn long after our sessions together have ended.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

It's great to have role models in life, and I have been fortunate enough to have two that have inspired me greatly. During my time at university, I had a professor who was a master at simplifying complex concepts and making them engaging for students. His ability to break down dense information into manageable, bite-sized pieces made him a standout teacher in my eyes. I remember leaving his lectures feeling excited and empowered, eager to learn more. It was then that I realized the importance of making learning simple and accessible, and I have carried that with me ever since.

In addition to my university professor, I also draw inspiration from two other figures in the world of culture: Alessandro Barbero and Sir David Attenborough. Barbero's passion for storytelling and his ability to make medieval history come alive is truly remarkable, while Attenborough's dedication to making science accessible to all is an incredible achievement. These figures have all inspired me to make complex concepts easy to understand and digestible, without ever sacrificing their depth or importance.

In my own tutoring practice, I strive to create an engaging and supportive environment where students can learn in a way that works best for them, and where they can be inspired by the joy of learning itself.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

As a tutor, I believe that the key to success lies in listening closely to my students. By taking the time to understand their unique needs and goals, I am able to tailor my teaching style and strategies to help them achieve their full potential.
Of course, extensive knowledge in the subject matter is also essential, as is experience in teaching it.

But what truly sets a good tutor apart is their ability to forge a relationship of empathy with their students. When my students come to me feeling stressed or anxious, I make it my priority to offer them a supportive and empowering learning environment.

In my own experience as a student, I have found that this combination of attentive listening, deep subject knowledge, and empathetic support is what truly sets a great tutor apart. And as a tutor myself, I am committed to bringing these qualities to every session and helping my students achieve their full potential.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my days at the Uni, I was often asked to assist my classmates with their social science and media coursework. One time, a student approached me completely overwhelmed with a project about media representation of marginalized groups. As we discussed the assignment, I realized that this student had a unique perspective and was just lacking confidence in their abilities. So, I encouraged them to take the lead in the project and provided guidance and support along the way. By the end of the project, the student had produced an outstanding piece of work, and their confidence had skyrocketed. This experience showed me that as a tutor, it's not just about imparting knowledge, but also about building confidence and empowering students to realize their full potential.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

As someone who specializes in social sciences and media studies, I find the field to be incredibly exciting and dynamic. However, this also means that there are constant challenges and difficulties to navigate. One of the main challenges that I have encountered is the rapid pace of technological innovation, which can sometimes overshadow the fundamental social and cultural structures that shape our world.

In my experience as a tutor, I've found that it's important to strike a balance between staying up-to-date with the latest technological trends and theories, while also maintaining a deep understanding of the underlying social forces that shape our world. By doing so, we can gain a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of the complex issues that we face today.

Furthermore, I believe that being able to navigate this challenge is a valuable skill that I can offer to my students. As a tutor, I strive to provide my students with a deep understanding of the social, cultural, and historical context that underlies media and societal issues. I believe that this approach not only helps my students to excel academically, but also prepares them to be engaged citizens and critical thinkers in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

While my love of music has always been a driving force in my life, my true passion lies in teaching. As a tutor, I find nothing more rewarding than helping students unlock their full potential and discover their own passions.

One of the things that I am particularly passionate about is making complex concepts and research methods accessible and enjoyable. I firmly believe that everyone has the capacity to learn and grow, and I strive to create an environment that is both supportive and challenging.

As someone who has pursued both music and academia, I bring a unique perspective to my teaching. I understand the importance of creativity, curiosity, and perseverance in both fields, and I encourage my students to explore their own interests and passions.

Ultimately, my passion for teaching is grounded in a belief in the power of education to transform lives. I am committed to helping my students achieve their goals and reach their full potential, whether that means acing an exam, mastering a new research method, or pursuing their own creative projects.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

What sets me apart as a Superprof is my unwavering commitment to helping my students succeed. I take a personalized approach to each student, tailoring my teaching style and strategies to their unique needs and goals. Whether it's acing an exam or pursuing a bigger project as a thesis, I am dedicated to helping my students achieve their full potential and feel empowered to tackle any challenge that comes their way.
