About Gillian
Kind, friendly, and enthusiastic about learning, I have worked as an Academic Coach and Tutor for ten years, and first volunteered in my school’s SEND department when I was 14. Growing up with a sister who has dyslexia and traits of ASD, I have empathy for neurodivergent people, whose gifts may not always be obvious within a traditional schooling context, and I recognise the effect this can have on confidence. In my tuition work, I emphasise the positive, and help students to recognise their own skills, which they might previously have overlooked, or taken for granted. I am constantly researching new ideas for how to work with students with additional needs, as I believe that good SEND teaching is good teaching. Good SEND teaching usually means being clearer, more concise, and precise, and providing memory aids (as well as patience). Those are the same things that make for good teaching practice for all students.

Helping others to develop their confidence and independence is my vocation. I am patient and kind, and focus on finding my student’s strengths, and using these to help them to help them to develop as a learner. I believe that there are a multitude of valid ways to approach the challenges that academic study inevitably presents, and I coach my students to find the solutions that work for them. I will begin by asking the student if there are particular areas that they want to work on, and will also take into account their current school curriculum and any reports that give us further information on the student’s current needs.

Perfect! Gillian was able to go through a whole hour of maths with a boy who for the first time in a long time was enjoying. Great methodology and fun. It was very reassuring.
Perfect! Fantastic and communicating and feeding back to parents when necessary in a clear way - and my daughter really likes Gillian as she is so friendly and approachable and made everything easy to understand.
Perfect! Gillian has been able to engage immediately and effortless with my 10 year old son. Even if he has attentional problems, she managed to catch his interest and build on his strengths, rather than focusing on his weaknesses. She started by building a relationship with him, and showing empathy and understanding about his difficulties with maths. My son is usually anxious, yet Gillian puts him at ease. She uses interactive strategies to make the tasks more fun and engaging, but at the same time she doesn't rely too heavily on the technology. I really recommend Gillian :-)
Perfect! Gillian review
After one week of tuition every weekday my ADHD/ASD 16 year old started feeling confident about his upcoming exams. We are now 3 weeks in, with a lesson every day 30-60minutes. Our son just did a maths mock exam today that he felt went well. Gill is helping with exam technique and helped set up a detailed revision plan for this weekend for example. Gill is a really nice, straightforward, down to earth and a fun person to work with. Our son gets on well with her which is a big plus. She worked hard to suggest the right tools to help him. We really recommend Gillian as a tutor.Perfect! Gill has been so patient with my dyslexic son (12). He is really benefitting from one-to-one sessions.

Excellent! Gillian was patient, friendly and knowledgable. My daughter felt reassured and comfortable saying she didn’t get it. Thank you.

Gill has been tutoring my children for nearly 6 years if not more. She is patient and very understanding and shows a variety of ways with dealing with mathematical problems. My children throughly enjoy their sessions with Gill and they have shown a greater understanding of Maths and English which is evident in their exam results. She really makes learning Maths and English very enjoyable. Each lesson is catered differently to all three of my children, as she knows what methods work best with what child. Something which is very rare for teachers/tutors to identify and implement in their teaching, but to Gill it's second nature.
I wish I had someone like Gill when I was struggling with Maths in secondary school.
She is truly hands down the best tutor my children have had.
Gillian Harthwaite is an amazing tutor! Our daughter ,who is autistic, had been out of school for some months and online learning seemed the best option. However she had also expressed a dislike of zoom . So what to do?! Well, Gillian was incredibly understanding as she has experience working with nurodivergent students.
So she gave options..face to face online, online with camera off, doing the work via chat, or sending the work over to be done.
She consistently went above and beyond to make learning accessible and enjoyable, and it has been a joy to watch our daughter's confidence soar once more.
Gillian is professional, reliable, understanding and very approachable. She responds promptly to any questions we have regarding the curriculum etc. And she keeps us updated on our daughter's progress.
She has prepared our daughter well for her upcoming GCSEs in Maths and English.
I would highly recommend Gillian to anyone seeking a tutor for their child.
I genuinely cannot fault her at all. A*!GIll started working with my dyslexic son in the autumn before my son’s GCSEs. My son was really struggling with English both language and literature and I was really concerned that he was going to fail his English language GCSE as in the end of year exams he got a borderline pass/fail grade - scrapped a 4, having also fallen asleep in the exam because he said he was bored! Things were not looking good... However, Gill managed to motivate my son to try and overcome some of his difficulties with English - he not only passed his English Lang GCSE he got a solid grade 7 (an A in old money) and huge thanks go to Gill- she is a star!!!
I met Gill at university where we took classes together. Gill is one of the most intelligent people I know - she has a great analytical mind and is able to tackle intellectual subjects with ease. What's more important though, is that she is also a gifted teacher; Gill is patient and empathetic, and able to come up with creative solutions. I would wholeheartedly recommend her as a tutor - she will do her very best to help you achieve your best.
Gill has tutored my son 1:1 in English & Maths for 12months. After the 1st lesson he was more positive about learning & his confidence has steadily grown.
Gill has tailored lessons for his curriculum syllabuses, individual needs, learning style & interests; making the sessions enjoyable & impacting significantly on school progress. He is now achieving more than predicted in both areas.
Gill is friendly, professional & has a fantastic ability to tune into students’ needs & enthuse them with her passion for learning.
An outstanding tutor that I would fully recommend.I've known Gillian for over ten years when we met at the Uni of Birmingham. Gillian is one of the smartest, brilliant and loveliest people I know. She is a brilliant tutor and I would absolutely recommend her to anyone!
