About Jocelyn

I do all my tutoring at the Cochrane Public Library so that no parent needs to feel any concern about the safety of their child. Parents are welcome to stay close by, within a visual distance. Because I did not grasp reading easily, I understand that patience is very important in tutoring without pressure. Not everyone learns at the same pace and it is important to realize that for some it takes longer than others. Some children will learn and enjoy the process more by choosing what they want to read, be it a comic book, or Beatrix Potter, a Dr. Seuss, or any number of other options. For some starting with a small book will begin to inspire confidence and I believe that is the stepping-off point for a future enjoyment of reading that can even become a hobby.

About the lesson

As a child I was very slow learning how to read. I struggled through the first couple of years of school. The turning point for me came when my Dad told me he would buy me any book I wanted as long as I would read the entire book. Part of that agreement was that I also had to give my Dad a personal paraphrase of what I had read so he knew I was actually reading and not just looking at the pictures in the book. This is how I began to get a grasp on reading and started to realize it could be something I enjoyed rather than something I had to do for school. This is also how I approach tutoring. When a child learns to read it opens a door to many learning opportunities. For me I realized I actually enjoyed learning about history, geography, different cultures and customs and many other things. I want other children to realize these same things on their own timeline. I am not a high-pressure tutor, this is all about realizing the enjoyment in learning.

I have known Jocelyn for many years as a good friend. She is empathetic, very patient and knows personally what it's like to struggle to learn to read as she was that child in her elementary school days.
She will instill in your child the skills to read, leaving them with a love of reading that will carry them on in their successful education for years to come.
