About Samuel
I am an active New York City based composer and educator, with over a decade of experience as a classroom teacher and private tutor. I currently work as Instructor Music Theory and Ear Training at William Paterson University. I have previously taught at the Walden School Young Musicians Program, Felician University, and as Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University of Oregon, where I completed my PhD in Music Composition with a supporting area in Music Theory in 2020. I am currently writing a textbook, Tonal Harmony at the Keyboard: A Practical, Schematic Method

What I teach:
COMPOSITION AND SONGWRITING
My lessons focus on studying relevant repertoire to inform your own music. Beyond simply writing music and receiving feedback, this allows you to absorb techniques and build a compositional toolbox that allows you to achieve your expressive goals.
(concealed information)
MUSIC THEORY AND MUSICIANSHIP
I teach tonal harmony by emphasizing the internalization of common chord progressions in their easiest-to-use voicings, and by writing, singing, and when possible, playing these at the keyboard. In this sense, I teach musicianship and music theory as one unified subject, with the goal of developing skills and knowledge in a musical, embodied way.
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:
As a composer and teacher, I believe that rigorous, skills-based musical training—when taught with flexibility, empathy, and creativity—can unlock a student’s expressive and intellectual potential. Whether I’m working with aspiring composers, performers, music educators, or hobbyists, my aim is to help them engage with music as a living language: one that can be internalized, practiced, and ultimately spoken with confidence.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Samuel is a most knowledgeable, articulate, and committed composition teacher. I dabble in composition, and he has improved my skills a good deal; I can count on him for feedback that is at once detailed, honest, and constructive.
