I like to cater my lessons to each student. Not everyone learns the same way, so teaching everyone the same way makes no sense. I teach using visuals, auditory clues and I tend to explain the same thing in different ways so the student can chose which one he or she likes best.
The practice of music theory I believe should be taught in conjunction with composition. Theory can be seen by students as extensive sets of rules and boundaries, however those boundaries exists as a canvas for creativity.
I teach by showing students what it is about a piece of music that makes it enjoyable to them. By doing so, the students will understand not just how to play a song they will know how it was written, and how to use such harmonic devices in their own works/compositions. By generalizing specific information the students understanding of music grows with every new song they learn.
I expect my students to have written or started to write lyrics. As a tutor, I will listen as well as rate it and offer advice.
I teach based on the student's needs and desires. Songwriting- I teach the fundamental elements of songwriting, the basics of what makes a good song. And guide my students with advice and ideas for their music. We spend time breaking down songs and talking about what's good, what can be better, and why.
I'm super flexible in my teaching style. If you have a goal of some kind, I've got a way to get you there. Intermediate instrumentalist with no theory knowledge? I had straight A's in theory. Great voice and musicality but don't know how to write? I've been writing for myself and other artists for years.
My lessons are meant for intermediate and beginner level students who have an interest in music theory. I prefer to give 45 mins to 1-hour lessons once a week. I like to hear about the music you're playing or singing currently and related it to our theory lessons.
My lessons are customized for each student based on their individual interests and learning style.
My teaching style is using hands on activities for the students to learn certain key concepts throughout the activities. Then, using video or my instructions to review and enhance their understandings. Lastly, giving out homework and mind map to apply their knowledge.
