About Sophie
My name is Sophie Goodman and I am a current Physics student at the University of Oxford. I started tutoring 4 years ago as part of my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and completely fell in love with it. It genuinely brings me so much joy to share the subjects that I am passionate about with others but also to enable them to improve and understand.
Since then I have had a variety of pupils all of whom have seen improvements in their grades but also in their confidence and understanding. I do recognise that tutoring is not a simple task which is why I try to continually improve through my own observations, advice from other teachers and through feedback from students themselves.

My biggest priority when tutoring is creating an environment where students feel secure and confident enough to ask questions. This is what allows students to truly improve in a subject. Too often I meet students who are scared to ask things for fear of getting it wrong or being seen as stupid and so they often do not progress. My approach to tutoring is built on the idea that the student is never at fault for not understanding; It is the job of the tutor to explain as many times and in as many different ways as necessary for the student to understand.
This provides the framework for how I run my sessions. They are all question oriented whether that is exam questions or ones from a textbook as the best way to learn something, particularly in Maths and Physics, is to solve problems. We will then pursue different ideas from these questions depending on what the individual grasps quickly and what they find difficult to get their head around. Everybody learns differently and my aim is to enable all students to feel confident in their understanding and find a love of learning.
I have 4 years of tutoring experience. 2 years of voluntary work at GCSE level and 2 years of paid work at A-Level standard. I have A-Levels in Maths, Further Maths and Physics myself. I am confident in tutoring both Maths and Physics up to A-Level and would also be happy to mentor somebody through the PAT (Physics Admissions Test) for Oxford.
