About Mehraz
I am a Registered Chemical Engineer (First Class) and after spending more than ten years managing organisations, I completed my MBA (Distinction), topped the class and earned trophies and prizes. I joined the University in 1993 after my MBA degree and completed my PhD on a part time basis in 2000. My PhD supervisor was a UK Professor (David Weir) and Director for Bradford Management Centre in UK. In 2007, I took early retirement from the University of Mauritius where I climbed the ladder and became an Associate Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Law and Management. I joined Bang College of Business of KIMEP, Almaty Kazakhstan in July 2007 and worked till June 2009 as a Professor of Marketing and Management. Later (2014-2016), I also had the opportunity to work as a Professor of Marketing in APIM (Asia Pacific Institute of Management) in New Delhi, India. I also had opportunities to teach in Morocco (Al Akhawayn University), France (Aix en Provence University), Malaysia (University Putra Malaysia and INTI), Madagascar (INSCAE) etc.
In January 2018, I received the Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA), a very coveted title in academia.
I have excelled in my academic journey earning only First Classes/Distinction and I am at your service to share my experience with you. My students have most of the time identified me as a Best teacher etc.
I do provide consultancy to several organisations and again my intervention and advice has been very well appreciated at all times - experience to share again.

Mehraz Boolaky: Teaching and Research Statement.
My goals in teaching are not simply to lecture the course notes from for example Power Points but also to ensure that students learn theoretical concepts and be engaged in active learning. I take maximum care to ensure that students follow a holistic approach to imparting contexts, global and multicultural perspectives, interpersonal skills and social responsibilities. I fully acknowledge that students are individuals, with different personalities, skills, attitudes, backgrounds and learning styles. My role as a teacher and facilitator is to
1. Provide timely feedback on student’s work taking care to point out strengths and weaknesses
2. engage students actively by posing challenging problems and creating an atmosphere of exploration and sense making
3. be a mentor and serve as a role model for building capabilities of students and grooming them to be and act as professionals,
4. assist student understanding and application of marketing and management concept to real life situations and
5. develop and enhance the logical and critical thinking as well as problem solving skills necessary for them to shoulder the responsibilities associated with their jobs
To achieve my objectives to effectively teach marketing and management courses in various countries, I make it a point to devote lots of my time outside the office to be conversant with domestic brands, prices, promotion, distribution, places, events, etc so as to catch students’ attention on what is familiar to them rather than using textbook examples etc. These initiatives enable me to provide more relevant and up to date examples to underscore classroom presentations. Further my extensive years of successful practical experience in marketing and management as well as my academic achievement (having been among the five best throughout my educational career) enhance my teaching skills and dictate to me what to instill in students to be among the best.
I have excellent mastery of theoretical concepts and techniques of courses I teach in addition to having put these into practice in real life situations – this helps me to contextualize and exemplify my lectures to facilitate learning. My discussion and explanation of theories are always backed by involving students to share their own experience and observations as well as getting them to analyze written and video case studies. I always update and use the latest concepts and techniques in class (I do not normally use old lecture notes except when they are really needed) and this automatically leads me to engage in research through its various forms, observations, discussions, surveys, and secondary sources. I try to use as far as possible students’ personal experience and ideas as a springboard to build and enhance their conceptual understanding. I use multiple criteria for evaluating students and thus assessment is normally based on case study analyses (written and oral), various research based projects, and activities and at least two individual closed book exams with open ended questions. I try to create challenging and significantly friendly learning environment where students feel at ease and relaxed so that each of them whether in a large or small batch can learn and apply what has been learnt.
I treat all my students as responsible adults and friends. Wherever I feel there are weaknesses or anything that calls for my intervention or recommendation, I make it a point to call the students to my office and hold frank discussions with them. I believe in and practice tight loose controls. I have consistently received high scores in student evaluation and I use constructive comments made to adjust my teaching and to become even more effective in all areas of instruction.
Research Statement
I am fully aware of the significant importance of research in tertiary education. I publish regularly in scholarly peer reviewed journals and encourage my students and academic colleagues to join me through joint publications. Together, we have published more than twelve papers during the last 2/3 years.
To get my students involved in research, I give research based assignments in various forms such as critical reviews of scholarly refereed papers, application of research findings to marketing and management problems, writing literature reviews, conducting surveys, focus group interviews, observations etc. In addition to lecture notes, I provide relevant scholarly papers to stimulate students to read, understand and interpret such papers. I also encourage my students to make it a point to visit hypermarkets and other places and observe the several aspects of marketing in action. Other research activities I normally request my students to undertake are to check adverts and brands for target marketing and positioning strategies, identify celebrities chosen by various companies and get then to reflect on the “why”, etc.
Among my most recent publications include a co-authored chapter ‘Mauritius: Towards a knowledge hub and society’ in an edited book on “Knowledge Management in Developing Economies: A Cross Cultural and Institutional Approach published in 2007 by Edward Elgar Publications, UK.; a co authored paper entitled “A study of the importance of Marketing in Small and Medium Sized Enterprises in Mauritius”, which paper received best paper Award by Emerald publications in the International CAMOT conference held in Beijing during 21-23 October 2008; a joint paper entitled "Entrepreneurship and Marketing: An exploratory study in Mauritius " published in the Journal of Chinese Entrepreneurship.
I am supervising my PhD student who is finalizing her doctoral thesis for submission at the University of Technology in Mauritius soon.
My future research goal is to complete a textbook on Marketing and Entrepreneurship that I started some time back. I have a working draft and I will need to supplement this by carrying out research on latest concepts, techniques and applications in the marketing and entrepreneurship area. Second, I plan to extend my specialization in the Strategic Management and Marketing area to the development of new theories that are associated with consumer behavior and e- marketing. Finally, I will continue my research on entrepreneurship, knowledge management and innovation. I will also pay attention relevant areas where funding and consultancy opportunities are available.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
I'm happy to recommend Dr. Mehraz Boolaky. He is a regular volunteer facilitator on our online courses in research writing, and is also a volunteer mentor for us at www.authoraid.info. He is an experienced online teacher and is always willing to help and provide helpful advice to students and early career researchers, whether that be in written advice or video discussion. I'm also lucky to have met him in person and can vouch for his trustworthiness and good humour.
I met Dr. Mehraz Boolaky during my Master of Public Administration studies at the University of Roehampton. Professor Boolaky was teaching the Research Methods that I attended from November 2016 until January 2017. During the three-months module, I was quite impressed with Professor Boolaky's dedication to bringing out the students' full potential.
Professor Mehraz provided the opportunity to discuss relevant concepts and literature to underpin our learning process. He was perceived by students as strict but fair. Mehraz is a committed teacher, always available to students for constructive consultations. With his teaching methods and strategy, Professor Boolaky succeeds to facilitate the education process very well, whereby the students are provided with the learning conditions in which they are able to achieve the best results.
I remember having personal issues during the module and, and as a result, having significant troubles in defining my Master Research Project general framework. Most particularly refining the research question and related sub-questions. I kept it too broad all the time and could not find relevant literature to this regard. Professor Boolaky insisted that I put in all my efforts until I focused on the research question. Finally, this support resulted in a Master Research Project graded with Merit.
For all said reasons, I would recommend Mehraz to other students so that you all can accomplish your educational and professional goals.
I know Mehraz as my research advisor when I studied at the University of Liverpool.
When I first called him Dr/Mr. Boolaky, he politely requested that I call him just Mehraz. So, in later messages and letters, I called him “Mehraz”.
Mehraz always supported me through all stages of work. At the same time, he allowed me to take independent decisions about the research, which left me free to act in all phases of my project, from the collection of bibliographic data to the final report. However, at the each stage he analyzed the methodology and the results, corrected errors, and recommended the right path through my analysis.
So, Mehraz was an ideal guide for me.
Dr Mehraz Boolaky
I feel privileged to write a few words on Dr Mehraz Boolaky, whom I have known in various capacities during my professional life and career.
As Assistant Registrar at the University of Mauritius, I had several interaction opportunities with him at high level committees. He has always displayed high level of academic integrity, student –centric disposition, strategic thinking and a holistic approach to academic and student affairs. His primary concerns with student welfare – academic and non-academic—underpinned his entire academic approach.
I also had the chance to interact with him in my capacity as Director, Centre for Life Long Learning and Professional Development, University of Mauritius. As a module developer for both undergraduate and post graduate programmes, Dr Boolaky always went that extra mile to produce high quality academic materials. As a tutor for both undergraduate and post graduate students, he excelled by his passion in ensuring that students` interests receive priority in any endeavour. As a dissertation supervisor at both undergraduate and post graduate level, Dr Boolaky spared no effort at making himself available to each and every student under his supervision. He guided them at every step in the process and ensured high quality outcomes in terms of products, student growth and development.
Dr Boolaky is a proactive academic with very good negotiating skills at striking strategic partnership with stakeholders at national and international level. He was instrumental in the University of Mauritius –European Union funding for a Masters Program in Port and Shipping Administration.
I am very pleased to recommend him for any academic endeavour.

Mehraz provided excellent support during my MBA dissertation at the University of Liverpool. With his help, I was able to produce a strong dissertation document, which was later used to write a business article. He also guided me during the editing of this business article which is currently published.
I am pleased to write a letter of recommendation for Dr. Mehraz Boolaky who I recommend to the other Superprof members. I came to know Dr. Boolaky in 2013 when he was my Dissertation Advisor for my master’s degree, MSc in International Management at the University of Liverpool.
I had the pleasure of benefiting from the advice and guidance of Dr. Boolaky who was not only an exceptional professor and expert in enabling me to understand the requirements of the dissertation at the master’s level but Dr. Boolaky was also inspirational in encouraging me to continue working on the dissertation to write a condensed version thereof for further publication in a recognized journal.
Given the virtual learning environment of the Laureate Online Education, Dr. Boolaky’s positive personality and integrity were instrumental in establishing a rapport of trust that gave rise to a successful outcome of the dissertation in an extraordinarily human and kind approach.
Dr. Boolaky’s professionalism and dedication to the realm of education also provided intellectual stimulation by motivating me to further my education and embark in the Ph.D. journey.
I recommend Dr. Boolaky to you without reservation. Superprof would highly benefit from the professionalism, expertise, and humanism of Dr. Boolaky.
Sincerely,
Nathalie Mosca

UNHCR GenevaI have had Dr. Mehraz as my dissertation advisor. He is passionate about teaching and his encouragement always motivated me to do my best. His teaching style is to allow students to see their mistakes and at the same time be independent. I strongly recommend him to any student who wants to excel.

He has passion for intellectual excellence, and is gifted in uncovering great puzzles. I strongly recommend him for any academic activity.

I have been a student of Prof. Mehraz Boolaky when I was pursuing my MBA. He taught us marketing in a very unconventional way. In every class, we were given exercises as well as case studies to understand them better. This not only made me understand difficult concepts of marketing theoretically but also made me capable of applying them during challenging situations.
Prof. Mehraz is a eminent teacher and trainer. He is keen in his work and takes up immense pain to promote the students to the expected level. He is also dedicated to the task put upon him and he takes almost care for the welfare of students community. So I recommend him for his post of tutor.
I have known Mehraz since he became my Dissertation Adviser on my MSc in International Management, at the University of Liverpool, in 2014. He is probably one of the most dedicated advisers you will ever find. He has shown genuine interest in my research and we had many very interesting conversations about form and content, always in a manner that brought me inspiration and joy for work. Mehraz is not just a leader, he is a very good listener, a great tutor, and adviser; a friend and someone you can rely on. I therefore highly recommend Mehraz to the Superproof members.
Mehraz is more than a teacher to me. He is a Guru as he is very knowledgeable, intelligent and has been inspiring, guiding and counseling me during the years I were at the University and during my career as well. He has really helped to make a difference in my life. I would recommend Mehraz as he is very reliable, trustworthy and committed towards his students.
I know Prof Mehraz for more than a decade at the University of Mauritius. Prof Mehraz has been an inspirational figure with exceptional leadership skills at the University, always listening to everyone and providing prompt, accurate and focused advice. He has no doubt confidently challenged a wide array of academics discourses providing innovative insights. Prof Mehraz is not only well known for his high academic achievements but he is acknowledged for being a good and trustworthy human being in the first instance.
