Why I teach play-by-ear?
I started learning piano when I was 5 years old, and have been on this musical journey for more than 30 years now. However, growing up, I couldn't find any teachers who can teach me how to play music with active listening.
It was many years later when I realized that almost every piano student were never taught how to play music properly with our ears, but instead only taught to read music with our eyes. Students who could play-by-ear are often self-taught, like me. It breaks my heart to see many students today who are merely note readers and can never play songs without heavily relying on music scores.
Luckily for me, on one fateful day, I just decided to stop feeling frustrated for not having access to music scores of my favorite music and I just started picking up the music bit by bit by ear. Till this day it remains my proudest and most important skill.
You dont have to envy the Youtubers who can play piano covers within mere hours after the song was released.
You dont have to envy when they dont seem to need hours of slow score reading and many more hours of practicing just to play that 1 song.
You dont have to envy people who can play piano spontaneously while you couldn't do it without a score properly practiced and readied for the performance.
Just like how we are able to identify shades of colour, or identify taste of food, identifying melodies of songs is very possible with the right training ;)
I believe many music students deserve to express themselves freely in music. Many talents, time, and money are wasted because they missed out on this one skill! Hence, I am passionate to spread the joy of play-by-ear with you today! If this is what you've been looking for, let's have a chat :D

Listen & Play Piano
- Unlike the conventional "classical" method, in this "modern approach" lesson, you'll learn how to identify melodies, recognize chords, play different accompaniment styles, improvise (advanced level), and create your own personal style (advanced level).
At the end of this course, you'll be able to:
1. Play songs without relying on music sheets
2. Play songs in your own favorite style
3. Improvise!

Time to complete each course:
Beginner = 3~8 months
Intermediate = 3~8 months
Advanced = 4 months and above
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Lessons include:
1. Active Aural Training
This is not the usual "classical exam format" aural exercises but practical aural techniques I've learned from my years of stage performance.
2. Chords
You will learn chords theory that harmonizes the melody and how to identify them just by listening to music.
3. Contemporary Accompaniment styles
This includes my bread-and-butter accompaniment styles I use in playing solo piano or keyboard in a band, and the knowledge I've accumulated over the past 18 years playing in church and band.
4. Music Theory on Pop Music
Music theory provides a systematic guide to your hearing so you'll understand what you heard and can even predict the harmony movement in most pop music.
* This is not a "speed learning" training course that promises master-level results within a mere few weeks or months.
* Results may vary depending on students' aural foundations, natural aptitude, perseverance, and discipline.
Age of student: (best) 13 years to Adult. Young learners welcome too!
Lesson mode: 1-to-1 (physical/online)
Lesson frequency: weekly

For years, I’d been tickling the ivories under the gazes of various classical piano instructors, only to realize my talents were about as useful in daily life as a chocolate teapot. What good is a skill that’s just for piano competitions? It wasn’t really cutting it for me anymore.
Then along came Sam, and things changed. He’s a genuine diamond in the rough—something I never unearthed back in Korea despite my efforts.
I’m so thrilled to have crossed paths with him and can’t help but tell everyone how amazing he is. That said, I’m half-tempted to keep him to myself so he doesn’t get too busy—I want to make sure I’ve got a VIP spot in his scheduleCher Sam is very amazing, very wonderful, very chill, very reliable, very awesome, very cool, very nice, very spectacular-
Okay I'll be serious here, his teaching style is actually impressive. I'm his student for currently 2-3 years now and I had a wonderful experience from his classes.
I've had an amazing experience learning music with Teacher Sam! He is incredibly experienced and has a talent for explaining even the most difficult concepts in a way that's easy to understand. His play-by-ear teaching approach has helped me develop the skills to learn new songs much faster while adding more variety and expression to my playing.
What sets Teacher Sam apart is his ability to break down techniques in a structured yet flexible manner, making lessons both engaging and effective. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced musician looking to improve, I highly recommend him to anyone wanting to take their musical abilities to the next level!I highly recommend Sam as he is not only musically talented, but also patient with students, as well as articulate and thorough in teaching.
If you want to impress your crush with your piano skill, Sam is your man to make it come true. He comes with style, he comes with class, and he is fabulous.
As his student, he managed to make me much more fabulous and confident. Tbf, I didn't manage get the girl I like, but what I do get are the pianist fingers that can satisfy any girlSam has taught me vocals in high school and has never failed to show commitment and patience! Will definitely recommend Sam as a tutor!
Sam is a patient teacher, he is good at explaining in ways that I can understand easily & fast. Not to mention he is a talented pianist himself!
If you want to learn how to play music FOR REAL, Sam is one of the best teachers to learn from.
I learned piano when I was young and quit at Grade 6 because I just lost the interest to continue. After meeting Sam, he inspired me to play music again. He showed me that playing music can be fun and unraveled the world of play by ear to me.
He's NOT just a piano teacher. With his guidance, I was able to apply what he taught me into playing the guitar and bass! Sam is truly an inspiring and amazing music educator to me.I've played with Sam together in quite a few bands / events, and he is one of the most creative and skillful pianist / keyboardist I have met. He is very knowledgeable in all kinds of music, and he is able to teach and guide us to play better, even though we play different instruments. His teaching method is easy to understand and I have definitely learned and improved a lot when playing together under his guidance. I don't think I have any musical talents, but ever since learning from him, I can now play by ear and improvise based on the situation. A great teacher for all levels.
