About Al
Honestly, I never wanted to do math in school. As a dyslexic kid, I struggled with confidence in my ability to tackle math problems effectively.
Then, something...horrible happened. After spending hours struggling with assignments, I realized I needed help. I started with online pre-recorded lectures, but what truly opened the door to my understanding was the ability to communicate and ask questions in real time with a tutor.
(..... I LIKE math??)
To my surprise, I discovered I was good at math! This newfound skill boosted my confidence not just in math, but in other subjects and aspects of life as well. Until that point, I had never really thought of myself as a "smart person." This transformation didn’t happen overnight, but it was a journey that reshaped my self-image.
I apply these skills frequently in my studies and work in forestry. Currently, I’m in my final year at Oregon State University, specializing in education. While I’m currently working as a nature preschool teacher in early childhood education, my ideal age group is middle to high school. I am in the process of obtaining my license to teach in public schools, where I can make a greater impact on students' learning journeys.

- A method rooted in non-judgmental investigation: what interests you about this subject? Where are we struggling and how can we overcome that with curiosity?
-A typical lesson plan is structured with the world in mind. Math isn't just concepts. My students will learn from humorous life examples. They may bring homework from school or test prep, but I will also make them small simplified problems that demonstrate the concept at play.
-Something unusual we may do is collect math problems from trees. It's a lot easier than it sounds but does involve tree hugging and a measuring tape.
-I would strongly recommend my sessions to middle and high-school students looking for extra help in their Math journey. I would hope to change even the most adverse Math-hater into someone who can use and appreciate this tool!
