About Kieren
Hi! My name is Kieren and I'm a guitarist, songwriter, and producer based in Sydney's north with over ten years of private, group, and program-based teaching experience. In 2018, I completed my studies in Jazz performance at the prestigious Sydney Conservatorium. I currently perform in the pop-disco group Cosmic Spice, where I hold production, song, and lyric writing credits. In 2019, I toured nationally with the English band Ward Thomas supporting legendary singer/songwriter David Gray on his Australian tour, performing at iconic venues like the Enmore Theatre, Riverside Theatre, Palais Theatre, and at Bluesfest Festival in Byron Bay. I believe in a flexible and nurturing teaching method where each student is able to grow and flourish under their own effort, without any boundaries to their creativity. I am focused on helping students create realistic and repeatable practice systems that allow for any musical goal to be reached, while at the same time allowing the student to explore their own personal relationship to music. I wish to impart my knowledge and experience to people of all walks of life and of all backgrounds, no matter your professional or musical aspirations. I love to teach and to have the satisfaction of helping others realize their musical dreams is something I live for! No matter the genre, I will help you be the best you can be! LGBTQIA+ Friendly Neurodiverse people welcome. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.

Why learn music theory with me? Well, if you wish to WRITE your own music, understand the WHY or WHAT on your instrument, or PASS an exam, you don't need to slog through a textbook; you need the specific guidance of a well-rounded, eclectic professional with a Bachelor in Music and over twelve years' experience as a full-time musician and educator... that's me! I believe that the knowledge and study of Western music theory should be tied directly to the musical practice and performance of the student. In our hourly lessons, we will learn the fundamentals of Western music theory as they relate to the music YOU are interested in. I don't privilege the study of classical or jazz harmony (unless you want to!); whatever YOUR music is, I'll show you how it ticks. I make my own material as needed for each student's learning style. If you are an aural learner, we will learn and navigate the topics with a minimum of notation. If reading or writing is your thing, then a focus on notation and so on. These lessons are ideal for musicians of any level or age. Prospective students only need a specific intention or goal to direct their study.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Kieren was our son’s guitar tutor for over a year in the lead up to the HSC.
He was always generous with his time and with his knowledge of the curriculum. Kieren was always ready to help him with composition, music selection, and improving his technique.
He was also able to provide him with suggestions for further resources to explore and help his revision. His feedback was always helpful, thorough and constructive.
We would have no hesitation in recommending Kieren if you are looking for a knowledgeable and easy to get along with guitar teacher.I got referred to Kieren through a friend that had lessons with him, and the recommendation didn't disappoint.
If I had to sum Kieren up in a couple of words, it's great balance.
Putting his extensive knowledge of music aside (which you'd expect every music teacher to have), Kieren has a well balanced teaching style between being chill and firm.
He's also patient with his teaching, without it seeming like there's a delay in your progress, and is very flexible with your demands and requirements.
Furthermore, Kieren's just the type of guy you'd more than happily spend an hour a week with to just hang and jam, so classes don't feel as much of a chore as some others may.
