About Mark

For the last 9 years, I’ve been lucky enough to teach guitar to students from a variety of backgrounds, each with their own set of goals and musical interests. I firmly believe that every student has unique talents, and my job is to help them find and nurture those talents through music. I take a personalized approach to each lesson, combining music theory with practical skills and creative exercises to make learning the guitar both fun and achievable. One of my proudest moments as a teacher was watching a group of students who had started from scratch go on to form a band and perform at local events. The confidence they gained throughout the process was incredible, and it reinforced my belief in the power of music to transform lives. The guitar isn’t just an instrument—it’s a tool for self-expression, and it helps students build valuable life skills like discipline, focus, and emotional resilience. It’s a joy to see how learning music can help students develop confidence, improve their emotional expression, and connect with others in new ways. The transformation I see in my students, both as musicians and as individuals, is the most fulfilling aspect of teaching guitar, and it motivates me to continue helping them reach their potential.

About the lesson

Guitar teaching is all about understanding the unique needs of each student, and with over nine years of experience and a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, I’ve developed an approach that combines technical skill-building with creative exploration.

I start each student with the basics—posture, rhythm, hand positioning, and finger strength—so they can play comfortably and confidently. After mastering these fundamentals, I adapt the lessons to fit the student’s individual musical preferences, whether they want to learn popular songs, explore classical guitar, or dive into more complex genres like jazz or blues. I integrate music theory into lessons by using the songs students are learning, which helps them see how theory directly applies to their playing.

For those interested in improvisation or composition, I provide creative exercises that challenge them to think outside the box and develop their own musical ideas. For performance-focused students, I work on building confidence, refining technique, and preparing them for live performances or auditions. I also incorporate modern learning tools like digital tuners, metronomes, and interactive apps to keep students engaged and help them practice more effectively outside of lessons.
