About Jai
With a strong background in structural biology and biochemistry, I am committed to helping students excel in their academic and research pursuits. Having completed my Ph.D. in enzyme mechanisms and protein structure determination and with ongoing research in cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and vision-related proteins, I bring cutting-edge expertise and a passion for teaching to every session. My experience spans across crystallography, enzyme kinetics, and protein modeling, which allows me to guide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical, research-driven insights.
I understand that every student has unique goals, whether you're aiming for top grades, preparing for exams, or diving into research. I’m here to help you achieve those goals by breaking down complex concepts into understandable steps. You can expect engaging lessons, hands-on problem-solving, and personalized mentorship tailored to your needs.
I’ve mentored undergraduate and graduate students, and I know how important it is to have a tutor who not only explains the subject but inspires confidence and curiosity. My approach is friendly and supportive, ensuring that you feel comfortable to ask questions, explore ideas, and grow academically and professionally. With my guidance, you’ll not only master the material but also gain valuable skills that will set you apart in your field.

As a tutor, I emphasize active learning, encouraging students to engage with material through discussion, problem-solving, and hands-on practice. I often integrate real-world examples from my research in structural biology and biochemistry, allowing students to connect theoretical concepts with practical applications. I use visual aids, such as 3D models of proteins and enzymes, especially in complex topics like cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and enzyme mechanisms. My teaching also includes a blend of question-based learning, where I guide students to think critically and explore multiple solutions, fostering deeper understanding and retention.
A Typical Lesson Plan:
Introduction and Objectives (5-10 min): I start by outlining the key concepts and skills for the lesson, relating them to previous material or upcoming research challenges.
Concept Exploration (20-30 min): I explain new content using visual presentations and diagrams. For instance, if we are discussing protein structure, I may use software to explore the 3D architecture of proteins.
Interactive Discussion and Problem-Solving (20 min): Here, I encourage students to solve problems or analyze real case studies. This could involve reviewing a protein structure and predicting the effects of a mutation or solving enzyme kinetics problems.
Practical Application (20 min): I design tasks like interpreting cryo-EM maps or analyzing experimental data, which are crucial skills for structural biology students.
Recap and Q&A (10 min): At the end, I summarize the key points, answer any questions, and assign exercises or readings for further learning.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor:
Research-Driven Insights: I bring cutting-edge knowledge from my work on retinal macromolecular complexes, phthalate-degrading enzymes, and structural analysis of the SARS-CoV-2 N protein. I share real data and research experiences, making lessons more dynamic and research-oriented.
Personalized Approach: I tailor lessons based on students' individual needs, whether they are aiming to enhance their academic performance, prepare for exams, or explore research careers. I am deeply invested in their growth, providing mentorship beyond lessons, helping them with research projects, career advice, and even networking opportunities in academia and industry.
Interactive and Visual Learning: My use of cryo-EM maps, protein structures, and advanced bioinformatics tools in teaching sets me apart, helping students visualize and truly grasp complex concepts.
Who the Lessons Are For:
Undergraduate and Graduate Students: My lessons are designed for students pursuing biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, and biotechnology at the undergraduate or graduate level.
Researchers: Early-career researchers or those interested in structural biology techniques like X-ray crystallography or cryo-EM can also benefit from my tutoring, especially for structural elucidation and protein characterization.
Specialized Areas: My lessons are particularly helpful for students and researchers focusing on enzyme mechanisms, protein structure determination, molecular docking, and biophysical techniques such as ITC, fluorescence polarization, and structural refinement.
This approach ensures that students gain both theoretical understanding and practical skills, preparing them for academic excellence and professional success.
