About Vyann

Hello!
My name is Vyann! I'm a junior attending Yale University majoring in HSHM (History of Science, Medicine, and Public Health) and Music. I have been tutoring for the last two and half years, primarily in inner city schools. Now that I'm back at school, I would like to resume working with kids from (upper elementary to high school).

I also have been playing classical piano and singing for sixteen years, so please don't hesitate to ask me about lessons or recommended teachers!

My focuses are as follows:
Essay writing
Reading comprehension
Spelling
French grammar and verb conjugation
Reading and writing in French
Music Theory

IMPORTANT: French lessons are primarily geared towards elementary/middle/high school age students who do not speak at all, or are beginners.
English lessons are primarily geared towards middle/high school students whose proficiency levels can range from beginner to advanced.

My lessons are based in three principles: 1) immersion, 2) practice, and 3) integration.

1) When learning anything, but especially language, immersing students its culture, history, and significance is crucial. Languages and dialects are both "living fossils" and evolving organisms. They are rooted in the past yet they reflect the ever-changing times.

In order for students to feel motivated and interested in learning languages a connection needs to be struck between the classroom and the real world.

Language immersion is listening to music sung/spoken in that language, reading news articles, listening to podcasts, and watching movies/tv shows. It is encouraging the student to recognize the power of knowing how to speak and understanding language as a tool not just a skill.

2) Practice, Practice, Practice. I know you've probably heard it a thousand times. Whether it was your mom yelling at you to practice the piano, or the dread of waking up early to go to sports practice.

Practice and repetition are essential parts of learning languages. This is just one of those age-old things that we can't rid ourselves of because it's the only way our brains learn new things!

I completely understand the boredom and monotony that swiftly arrives during exercises. Which is why the bulk of our lessons will not include countless minutes and excruciating seconds of verb conjugation (though there will have to be some of that I'm sorry ) .

Practice may not make perfect, but it does continue the process.

3) Lastly, I want to stress the importance of integrating your interests, talents/skills, and needs into our lessons. This is your time--and though I may be teaching you, this experience, ultimately, depends on how much you make of it.

I hope this was helpful and informative!
Please let me know if you're interested!

Best,
Vyann
