About Katty
The piano, to me, is a gateway to endless musical and personal exploration, and teaching it is an ongoing adventure filled with discovery and connection. I strive to build lessons that blend rigorous technique with imaginative expression, ensuring students develop both a strong technical base and the freedom to create their own musical narratives. Foundational skills like hand coordination, finger strength, and rhythmic precision are approached methodically but with sensitivity to each student’s pace and needs. Alongside this, I integrate music theory, sight-reading, and ear training, always contextualizing them within pieces that resonate personally with the student. I love introducing improvisation and composition early on, as these activities unlock creativity and deepen musical understanding. My students range from young beginners to adults, and each journey is customized—whether it’s preparing for an exam, learning to accompany singers, or composing original music. One memorable experience was coaching a teenager through a complex piece that initially felt overwhelming; through breakdowns, targeted practice, and mental focus techniques, they transformed frustration into triumph, culminating in a confident recital performance. I encourage students to develop mindful, focused practice habits and to view challenges as opportunities for growth. I believe a strong student-teacher partnership, built on open communication and mutual respect, is essential for success. Teaching piano is a dynamic process that combines the development of strong technical skills with nurturing creativity and emotional expression. My philosophy centers on meeting each student where they are and guiding them toward their personal goals with lessons tailored to their learning style and musical interests.
I begin by cultivating fundamentals such as proper hand positioning, finger agility, rhythm, and sight-reading, ensuring these skills are always practiced within musical contexts that excite the student. I integrate music theory and ear training to build comprehensive musicianship and empower students to understand and interpret music deeply. Creativity is encouraged through improvisation and composition, enabling students to develop their own artistic voice and confidence.
I use technology, including recording tools and digital practice aids, to provide objective feedback and help students stay motivated. Creating a nurturing and encouraging environment is essential, where students feel supported in taking risks and celebrating progress. Whether aiming for performance, academic goals, or simply the joy of playing, my goal is to help students become versatile, confident pianists who experience the transformative power of music.
