About Sylvia

I want to help students and writers gain confidence and proficiency in their writing because I know what a huge difference it can make. I had one year in my schooling with an English teacher who changed everything for me. My writing changed drastically that year, and I've been inspired to teach ever since. It's a common story, and an important one. Knowing how to write a good essay is relevant to most classes and the skills of analysis that must be developed are endlessly transferable.

My approach in creative writing has been primarily informed by workshops during my undergraduate years, with a strong emphasis on individuality and respectful honestly.

About the lesson

I strongly believe in bringing out each student's individual voice and potential. I will work with you to find out the best way for you to learn and build skills to ensure lifelong independence and confidence in your writing. Whilst working as a tutor at UC Berkeley with students from all levels, I learned to let students show me where to meet them in their writing and how to bring the most out of them. I have assisted many students with assignments and applications, and am happy to work in British or American English.

When you are shown how to reach a skill on your own, and not just told, the lesson will remain with you for much longer.

In my academic writing services, I will help you learn how to craft stronger thesis statements, build quick, strong outlines, and support your arguments with reasoning and textual evidence fully integrated.
In my creative writing services, we will work together to form a plan that works for you. There is no one way to write creatively and we will work to preserve your individuality in your writing whilst maximising impact on your readers.
In my ESL services, we will work on topics that interest you and learning to naturally use English. I focus on building confidence, especially in answering and researching questions and vocabulary, and find that an intrinsic understanding of English follows.

I am happy to offer 30-60 minute sessions depending on need and, if you would like to maximise our time together, will offer you homework.

My academic writing services are best suited for students over 15 years old. My creative writing and ESL services are suitable for students of any age and level.
