Lesson topics vary depending on the skill level of the student! I tend to start with the basics of reading and analyzing music, then branch out to chord theory, and more advanced topics like secondary dominance over time. I tend to use examples in my teaching to help teach, so connecting the theory on the paper to the sound of music. I also make worksheets with my students as we're going through each lesson, so they have something tangible to take with them after each session.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

I first developed a passion for music and singing specifically from my parents taking me to Broadway shows. I still remember sitting in the back of my parents' 2003 Honda Odyssey with my ear pressed against the speaker, matching pitch with the actor playing Franki Valli in the Jersey Boys musical. Over time I developed a love of piano through playing lead sheets and accompanying friends who wanted to sing different musical theater songs.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I am a huge musical theater nerd but I also listen to an eclectic collection of classical & pop music. It really depends on the day, but I've always been a huge fan of the Heathers Musical soundtrack.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I love all the courses I teach, I think that it is really difficult to combine the different skills I teach, so teaching people to play and sing at the same time, and how to connect piano and vocal technique can be very challenging but rewarding at the same time.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I think that the voice is very complicated because you have to understand technique from how it feels within your voice/instrument, whereas with something like piano it is more concrete, are you dropping your wrists properly? Are your fingers properly arched? and so on which can physically be seen, whereas a lot of vocal technique is based in sound.
  • What are your keys to success?

I think for my lessons it's having clear goals and objectives on what you want to improve on paired with an enthusiasm for the subject. What do you want to learn specifically? Is it to expand your vocal range? Learn how to read music? Play your favorite song on piano? I try to identify these objectives and move forward from then on.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Probably Stephen Sondheim, Joni Mitchell and Billy Joel. Three very different people, with very different musical styles and genres, it would be interesting to see how they would talk with each other, and how their musical intellects and approaches interconnect.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I had the opportunity to perform a solo at the Kennedy REACH Center for the Arts, and the night before the performance, the director told me someone had to miss the performance, so I had to learn a different verse of the song in Neapolitan Italian for the next day. I learned a lot about being flexible and working under pressure.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I am really kind, enthusiastic, and excited to be teaching voice, piano & music theory. I love music, I love singing, and I love analyzing music with music theory, so I really appreciate the opportunity to spread that knowledge.
