About Wei

Hello, I’m Wei. I came to London five years ago, and since then I’ve been teaching Mandarin to students of all ages, levels, and backgrounds. Having a background in arts and humanities, I’ve always been curious about cultures and languages. I also love travelling and meditation, and having explored many countries, I’ve developed a strong sensitivity to cultural nuances and differences. This experience helps me find the fun and fascinating details hidden in everyday life and language, and I bring that awareness into my lessons.

I’m good at learning myself, and I enjoy finding efficient, tailored methods for different students. Efficiency matters, but so does enjoyment — learning with me is immersive like travelling. Together, we might virtually follow the Yangtze or Yellow River, explore Chinese cities and villages through Google Maps, or learn real daily expressions by watching a popular Chinese dating show. You’ll notice not just the words but also body language, tone, and facial expressions, cultural differences and so on — for example, how Chinese people often say “你好你好你好你好” or “谢谢谢谢谢谢” repeatedly, instead of simply “你好” or “谢谢.” These small but important details are practical and fun! And I found these immersive learning works quite well and efficiently for my students.

We might also use documentaries, films, songs, traditional medicine, or even Chinese philosophy to deepen understanding. I also provide homework, clear goals, and a timetable for students preferring structured learning. Whether you want a relaxed or disciplined approach, I’ll bring you lessons immersed in real Chinese cultural contexts. I’ve been in London for years and speak English fluently, so beginners don’t need to worry — I am patient and supportive. Feel free to book a free trial lesson with me!

Learning Mandarin is not as difficult as many people imagine!
Mandarin grammar and everyday expressions are actually simple and fun. For example, learning tones can feel like singing, and memorising new words can be like playing with Lego. I will share these creative methods and perspectives with you. Many of my students have been able to move from zero knowledge to holding basic conversations in just four lessons.

In class, we will use rich and engaging materials:

Watch a popular Chinese dating show to see how strangers greet each other in real life, while learning the social rules behind “hello” and “thank you” in Chinese.

Practise listening with podcasts supported by subtitles, pinyin, and English translations.

Travel virtually on Google Maps through Chinese cities and villages, chatting about everything we “see.”

Dive into my WeChat conversations to learn how people really speak in daily life.

Explore Chinese culture through documentaries, films, songs, and even topics like Chinese medicine or theology.

You can choose your preferred learning style:

Casual learners: travel along the Yangtze or Yellow River while practising language, role-play shopping or dining out, or explore Chinese culture in London through real-life walks.

Structured learners: follow a timetable with clear goals, regular homework, and preparation for certifications like GCSE or A-Level Chinese.

No matter your style, I’ll ensure that lessons immerse you in real, contemporary Chinese culture, combining my experiences from both Europe and mainland China.

Let’s discover the joy of learning Mandarin together!

Here I'd like to share some Fun Facts about Chinese below:

1. Chinese is like “talking by painting and drawing.”
Unlike Indo-European languages, Chinese works on a visual and poetic logic. Once you grasp this, tricky grammar becomes much easier. For example, the difference between 这书 and 这本书 makes perfect sense when you see it visually rather than trying to “translate” it. Chinese is a multi-sensory language: the sound, the written character, and even the feeling it evokes are all consistent. It’s like seeing, hearing, and sensing meaning at the same time.

2. Learning words is like playing with Lego.
Chinese characters are “building blocks” you can combine. For example:

电 (diàn) = electric

脑 (nǎo) = brain

电脑 (diànnǎo) = “electric brain” → computer

Once you learn the logic, building vocabulary becomes playful and super efficient—like snapping Lego pieces together.

3. Chinese opens a window into philosophy and culture.
The language reflects how Chinese people think about the universe, time, and human relations. For example:

世 (shì) = endless time

界 (jiè) = vast layers of space

世界 (shìjiè) = “world” → time + space together.

Even everyday words carry philosophical depth, showing how language and worldview are intertwined.
