What can you do if you can’t get to the gym because you don’t have the time or money or the gyms are closed?
Exercising at home seems to be the best way to build muscle or burn calories. However, without a coach, it can be difficult to know what you should be doing or even finding the motivation to exercise. Fortunately, there are games like Wii Fit that you could use to keep up your exercise routine when you can’t get to the gym.
In this article, Superprof is looking at the “ancient” Wii Fit game that was designed to help you with exercising from home and meeting your fitness goals. We’ve been able to exercise at home since 2008 thanks to Nintendo!
Wii Fit: The World’s First Real Exercise Game
For the very young or those living under a rock during the 2000s, the Wii was Nintendo’s seventh-generation video game console that was released in 2006 and relied heavily on motion controls for gameplay. It opened the world of video gaming to a lot of people who’d later be dubbed “casual gamers”.

Two years after the launch of the Wii, Nintendo released Wii Fit, a sports game that came with the Wii Balance Board, a sort of digital bathroom scale that could detect your movements and could be used as an input device for the game.
As the Balance Board could detect the player’s centre of gravity, a lot of Wii Fit’s gameplay relied on this. However, it wasn’t just about balancing, players could also work on their abs, glutes, stamina, and strength.
In terms of equipment, you’ll need the Wii Fit game and a Balance Board, which can be found today for around £30 to £50 and a Nintendo Wii and controllers, which can also be found for similar prices.
We recommend that you set aside some space to exercise like you would in a gym or a sports hall. Thus, you won’t bump into any furniture and you’ll be able to do your exercises and stretches without any worries.
It might be useful to invest in a yoga mat for the exercises on the floor. There are quite a few exercises where you’ll be close to lying down. The mat is also useful for running on the spot, provided it doesn’t tend to slip.
When you first start the game, it’ll ask you to stand on the Balance Board and it’ll give you a fitness age that will change over time. It’s not uncommon to be given an age quite a way away from your actual age. Your goal is to get this number down.
The Exercises You Can Do
With Wii Fit, the goal is to work on every part of your body. There’s a large number of different exercises you can do that will work on your:
- Cardiovascular system
In other words, through these different exercises, you can work on almost every part of your body. This is a lot like Ring Fit Adventure, but without the RPG side of things.
There are 4 main groups of activities: yoga, strength training, aerobics, and balance games. The relative difficulty varies across the categories, but it’s always a good idea to mix things up.
You might want to start with some strength training before doing some aerobics and then yoga and a balance game, for example. There’s a lot to choose from with this game.
What’s “New” in Wii Fit Plus?
A year after Wii Fit was released, Nintendo released Wii Fit Plus, a follow-up to the original. In this, there are a few differences:
- There are more exercises for you to do.
- You can weigh a child or pet using the Balance Board.
- The calories are more accurately counted.
- Personalised programmes are available.
- Better menus with more information.
The game has a better focus on well-being and managing your weight and more games focus on balance. If you’ve taken Wii Fit as far as it can go, you might want to look at Wii Fit Plus.
It’s essentially an improved version of the original that was released a year before it. Those who’ve already invested in a Balance Board might want to pick up a copy of Wii Fit Plus as it doesn’t cost very much.
Of course, if you haven’t bought either, you could always pick up Wii Fit Plus immediately. You can find the game for around £10 online or second-hand or get it with a Balance Board for a similar price to the original.
Wii Fit U was also released for the Wii U, but this is much harder to get a hold of than Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus. This version has a lot of main content from the other games, too. However, the gameplay is improved through the use of the Wii U’s gamepad.
You can also use the Wii Fit U Meter, a pedometer that can count how far you’ve walked or run or even convert this into a height to give you a better idea of the distance. If you don’t have a Wii U, it’s probably not worth going out and buying one just for this game as the Wii games are just as effective in terms of health and fitness and much easier to find.
Exercising with a Wii is a Good Idea (and a bit retro!)
Whether you exercise with Wii Fit, Wii Fit Plus, or Wii Fit U, exercising at home can be quite easy. Just make sure the level provides you with a challenge.

Of course, if you’re looking for something more modern, have you thought about Ring Fit Adventure?
The only reason you wouldn’t is because of the price. A lot of families have an old Nintendo Wii lying around somewhere and just need to dig it out of the cupboard or attic and the cost of a Balance Board is pretty cheap, at least in comparison to buying a Switch and Ring Fit Adventure.
Furthermore, the Wii Fit is a pretty simple way to work on your well-being. The Balance Board can be quite entertaining to use and you may even forget that you’re working on your fitness.
If you’re looking for a game that can still help you to break a sweat after over 10 years on the market, look no further than Wii Fit. You’ll also recognise the Wii Fit Trainer as a character from Super Smash Bros.

Of course, if you want even more help, consider hiring a private fitness tutor on Superprof! Many experienced and talented fitness instructors can help you to get in shape, train, lose weight, or improve your strength or endurance.
Generally, tutorials are offered face-to-face or online to individuals or groups. Each type of training and tuition has its pros and cons so think carefully about which one would be right for you, your level, your fitness goals, and your budget.
Face-to-face fitness instructors can tailor each session to you and your level to ensure that you get the most out of every activity you do. Usually, this type of coaching is more costly than the others as you're paying for the tutor's time in and out of the sessions as well as the time and money they have to spend to get to you. Of course, with every minute focusing on you, this type of training is also the most cost-effective.
Group training sessions are great for those on a budget as you can spread out the cost of the instructor's time since every member of the class will be paying for the session. While this means that you won't be able to enjoy sessions that are tailored just to you, there will be other participants there and it can be motivating to exercise with others, especially if they're of a similar fitness level.
Thanks to the internet, online personal training sessions are also available. Much like with video games, your trainer will be behind a screen. Since they don't have to travel to their customers, they usually charge less as they don't have to worry about travel costs and can also schedule more sessions each week due to the time saved by not travelling.
