About Daniel

I'm a university student entering my final year of aerospace engineering at UWE Bristol. After taking a gap year during the 2018 - 2019 academic year in order to self-tutor and resit my A-levels privately, and gained significant experience in how to efficiently tutor and reteach concepts in a way an individual person can best understand. Ultimately, I was able to raise my grades 3 full levels, going from 15% to over 80% in several modules. I feel that my first-hand experience with both being a struggling student and successful self-tutor grants a unique mindset that will allow me to be of great use to students who are facing difficulties.

About the lesson

If you can't explain a concept to a 5-year-old child, then you don't properly understand the concept yourself. I teach how I learn - breaking down concepts to their most basic, core fundamentals, and using this new understanding to re-establish a sound foundation on which to build a truly solid grasp of the subject in question.

There is no such thing as a poor mathematician; there are only those who have not discovered the exact way - the exact analogy, or explanation, or diagram, or example - that they can use to get maths to *click* in their brain. That moment when you finally understand the little thing you missed, or the small part you misinterpreted, hits you like a lightning bolt. In my experience, the vast majority of all difficulties students face with maths are simply due to a slight misunderstanding of the basic principles at hand, as they are presented in a given context; and this is the main point of attack for my lessons.

I love employing diagrams, thought experiments, and practical analogies, all of which being how I teach myself concepts, to strengthen the fundamental grasp a student has of their mathematical landscape. We will progress gradually and work to develop an understanding of the idea at hand, cutting through confusing terminology and intimidating symbols, all the while using easy-to-digest language and working at a comfortable pace for the tutee. I'm an eloquent, unintimidating, and approachable person, and will fully accommodate the student at whatever speed they work best at.
