About Ami
Hi, I’m Ami Reader, and I’m a scientist. Yes, I appreciate the irony that “Reader” is a “scientist”. I graduated from Camden County College with my AS in science with a chemistry focus and a 3.9 GPA. I graduated from Rutgers Camden with my BS in chemistry with a minor in forensic science and mathematics and a 4.0 GPA. I graduated from Rutgers Graduate School Camden with my master's in forensic science and a 4.0 GPA and distinction. I have tutored general chemistry (111 and 112) and General Organic and Biological Chemistry (GOB 101) in an official capacity. I also teach GOB 101 as well. I have unofficially tutored classmates in every class I’ve attended through my academic journey as I enjoy sharing knowledge and helping others succeed. I also have experience in doing outreach with chemistry and forensic science. I’ve created and demonstrated educational activities for the Mutter Museum at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

Do protons positively petrify you? Are electrons bringing too much negativity into your life? Do you find molecules maddeningly monstrous? My approach to tutoring and teaching is that of a nerdy science girl boss who enjoys sharing knowledge and having fun while doing so. It’s challenging to learn when you’re bored. Science can seem tedious when one is just staring at equations and data all day. It’s important to make learning fun, interesting, and applicable to the “why, what, and how.” Why are you taking these subjects? What is your end goal? How will learning these subjects help you in your future career? With science, practicing problems that involve the theory is extremely important. My go-to methods for tutoring generally involve helping walk students through example problems to help them understand how to go about solving them, the theory behind the problems, and relate the tedious parts to interesting real-life applications. I then have students walk through problems with me so that we can hone the skills and knowledge required for future problems. I like to discuss with the student to find where their trouble areas and strengths are and tailor each lesson to the individual. Our minds all work differently, after all. I began tutoring during my undergrad after a professor spotted me helping my classmates understand the material in the hallway after class. I continued to be involved in tutoring general chemistry and general organic and biological chemistry in an official capacity through my undergrad and unofficially continued to tutor my classmates in various chemistry, biochemistry, and forensic science classes through grad school. I love helping others learn and sharing knowledge and I enjoy the challenge of the puzzle that is: “how will YOUR mind understand this?” I have also created and demonstrated various forensic science outreach activities, participated as an assistant in the annual science Olympiad at my community college, and generally enjoy sharing science with others. I hope to spread an enjoyment of science to those around me, which is why I’ve also begun working as an adjunct chemistry professor this year. If you need some help understanding chemistry, biochemistry, or forensic science and don’t mind some puns and dad jokes along the way, then maybe I could be the “solution” to your science problem.
