Learning math or physics can be split up into two steps: understanding the concepts and applying those concepts. Mastery then comes when you can take the concepts and their applications and understand how they work together.
For students there is a third part: practicing so you can rock a test.
I think that some level of goofiness and creativity is helpful, and luckily this comes naturally to me.
Parts of lessons focused on understanding concepts will be conversational. On my end, I’ll be seeking to understand what the student knows, doesn’t know, is confused about, enjoys or is stressed by, and going from there. I am very able to distill concepts to their core and usually can present this core in a few ways.
I think one thing that sets me apart is my breadth of experience. My undergraduate degree is a BS in Mathematics (focused on theoretical math), I then gained a ME in Nuclear Engineering while working as a nuclear engineer, and am now living abroad as I pursue a degree in management and sustainability. As a part of my work as a nuclear engineer for nine years, I interviewed hundreds of students in math, physics, and other engineering related subjects (technical interviews with consideration of other workplace factors). All this to say: I was raised in deep understanding of theory, have worked in application of theory, and have a lot of experience working with people to figure out what they understand and to help them get past nervousness and other blocks to get through problems.
All the hard technical background aside, I think what makes me an exceptional tutor is my general good humor, patience, understanding and humanity. I’m not looking to be a drill sergeant (unless that’s what the student wants and needs).
