About JamesNate
I hold an MA in literature, a BA in modern literary studies (magna cum laude) and a minor in education (both from the University of California, Santa Cruz). I also hold AA degrees in Spanish and liberal arts (from Cabrillo College). Lastly, I’m in the final stages of finishing my PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of California, Santa Barbara. At UCSB, I have worked in the Comparative Literature, German and Slavic, and French and Italian Departments; at UCSC, in the Writing Program and departments of Literature, Critical Race and Ethnic Studies, History of Consciousness, and History of Arts and Visual Culture; at Cabrillo College in the Summer Migrant Program and the Writing Center. At the Université Paris 8, Vincennes - Saint-Denis, I have taught in the Centre de Langues (CDL) and the Langues, Littératures et Civilisations Étrangères et Régionales Parcours : Mondes anglophones (LLCER) departments.

My pedagogical approach involves a fluid, student-centered approach. That is, my lesson plans are not only adapted to fit the needs of individual students, but also geared toward their own long-term goals and expectations. I do not approach education as if it were a recipe or formula, and we will make the necessary adjustments along the way. At the same time, there are situations in which thinking in a cookie-cutter-like fashion is what this world requires (e.g., standardized exams from the GED, SAT, and TOEFL, to the GRE).
