  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

After my graduation in India, I started teaching subjects like Maths, Science and English to the high school students I graduated from as a voluntary service. I received good responses from my students, which helped me develop my interest in teaching in the earlier days. During my master's, I used to do a teaching assistant job with my supervisors, which included talking tutorials and laboratory sessions. After completing my master's, I started working as an assistant professor in the department of Mechanical Engineering at ICFAI University, Tripura, India. I worked there for three years and taught various subjects, for instance, Fluid Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mathematics-I and Machine Designs. It boosted my confidence as a teacher, and after coming to Ireland back in 2019, I started working as a private tutor with Superprof.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I generally teach Mathematics and Physics as I am very confident with these two subjects. I also like to teach English as I am a certified English speaker with 6.5 bands in IELTS.
The subject I like a bit less is Biology. Even though it is fascinating, it requires lots of remembering.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, my parents are my role model who has been in the teaching profession for more than thirty years. They used to be my schoolteacher, and I got to learn all the subjects for my leaving certificate exams from them. Besides that, I also learned some critical life lessons, such as discipline, time management and consistency.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Apart from being knowledgeable, a good tutor must be empathetic towards the students and honest with his duties. A good tutor should be a good motivator who encourages his students. He or she should also have good listening qualities and patience while explaining things to his pupils. The things that make a good teacher are the way of explaining an advanced topic simply along with their teaching skills.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

While reviewing math symbols with my students from mathematics class, I drew a greater-than (>) and a less-than (<) sign on the chalkboard and asked, “Does anyone remember what this mean?”
A boy confidently raised his hand. “One means fast-forward, and the other means rewind.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

In terms of difficulties, I still feel that I need to gain more knowledge for the subjects I am teaching. I sometimes get questions from my students on unrelated topics, and I wish I could answer them all instantly. I believe that there is no end to learning, and teaching is one way of learning not only from books but also from the students.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Teaching is my passion. I put all the effort into making my students understand what I am trying to explain. Besides that, I love learning new software and love photography.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

As a tutor, I always try to understand what it is like to be a student who might lack basic knowledge and confidence and feel stressed. I try my best to explain things in different ways possible with some practical examples. I also enjoy teaching a lot and always think of teaching as a noble profession.
