About Maya
I am a singing tutor with over 5 years of experience and a Bachelor of Music Education with a focus in Voice. My greatest passion is helping singers bring stories to life through music. I specialize in vocal storytelling, especially within Jazz Standards, Broadway solos, and the rich Golden Age repertoire. These styles allow singers to explore both vocal technique and dramatic expression in meaningful ways. I guide students in mastering swing phrasing, jazz ornamentation, and character interpretation so their performances feel authentic and alive. Lead sheet reading is also a skill I emphasize, empowering singers to approach music with confidence and independence. My lessons are built around both technical growth and artistic exploration, always aiming to balance precision with personal expression. I enjoy working with passionate adults who want to deepen their artistry, seasoned singers looking to refine their style, and community theater actors preparing for roles. Each student brings unique goals, and I tailor lessons to honor their individuality while stretching their creative potential. With encouragement and clear guidance, I create a supportive space for singers to explore, experiment, and grow. Every session is designed to strengthen both the voice and the storyteller within. My teaching profile is built around the belief that singing is storytelling. Every lesson is designed to help students connect their voice with emotional expression and character. I use vocal character work to bring songs to life, guiding learners to explore the dramatic colors and textures of their sound.
Acting through song is a key part of my approach, as I want singers to communicate stories with honesty and depth. I also focus on dramatic timing, helping students find those powerful moments that give a performance lasting impact. Stage confidence is another area I nurture, encouraging singers to feel comfortable, present, and connected when they step in front of an audience.
I support students at different learning speeds, adapting lessons so progress feels natural and steady. For those preparing for advanced studies or formal training, I help refine technique, artistry, and interpretation. For those who sing in ensembles or community groups, I provide tools for blending, phrasing, and expressive presence.
Every singer comes with unique emotional needs, and I create a space where each voice feels valued and supported. My teaching is personal, uplifting, and responsive to the individual.
