I base my teaching method on a critical thinking, analysis, and a question-answer approach. I don't want students simply telling me that x allowed for y to occur-- I want students to form an argument, and support it with evidence, rather than making claims. When we approach a specific time in history, let's think about the ways in which we can understand the context of the world and the events and philosophies that led up to that time period. Why did the author write this text? Why did he feel it was important? When I teach international relations, I want students to understand the context, but also understand the significance of international relations theories, institutions, and how they shape our understanding of the international system. Who are the main actors in the international system and why? How did they get there? What factors in history allowed these actors to rise over time? In order to 'do' history or international relations, we need to have discussions, but we also need to ask questions, and ask more questions, and even more questions! Asking questions is key, and finding the answer is what studying history or the international system is all about. Maybe not finding the exact answer, but making an argument to help explain what we know.
I also value the importance of learning differences. If students prefer an audio approach over a visual one, let's make that happen! If students prefer a visual one, let's make sure we incorporate maps, photographs, and paintings to guide a visual memory as well-- which is just as important!
