About AJ
Hi there! My name is AJ and I'm a newly qualified, socially-minded teacher of secondary history with additional experience teaching politics and religious studies as well as philosophy at the undergraduate level. I'm a recent PGCE graduate from the University of Bristol in England. My previous degrees include a Master's in Philosophy from McMaster University (Thesis: On Judicial Review and Democratic Authority: Dedication to a Process) and a Bachelor's (Honors) in Justice, Political Philosophy, and Law with a minor in Political Science also from McMaster, graduating Summa Cum Laude. My prior teaching experience includes two years as a Teaching Assistant at McMaster (for which I won the Philosophy Department's Teaching Assistant Award in my first year), and one year of teaching practicum as a Student Teacher at Hayesfield Girls School and Mixed Sixth Form and Bristol Cathedral Choir School. Also, I have officially been a private tutor since 2021. I am passionate about my subjects and am also constantly working to continue my professional development. Currently, I am pursuing opportunities to further specialize in areas such as Indigenous history; Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in the classroom; Decolonization; Sustainability and the Environment; and social, emotional, and mental health. On a more personal level, I am a huge baseball fan (let's go Dodgers!) and love to read, travel, and cook! Above all, I am passionate about teaching and learning. Admittedly, as a young student I didn't much care for school. However, through some incredibly empowering and inspiring teachers, I grew to not only find confidence in myself but also fell in love with learning in the process; a love that I hope to share with you!

The main goal of my lessons is to encourage curiosity and sharing of ideas by creating a fun, supportive and safe space for students to ask questions without fear of failure, push the boundaries of their knowledge, and feel confident in their voice and ideas.
I am passionate about my job and believe that building strong connections with students is essential for their success. I believe that these connections give students the ability to feel comfortable making mistakes, taking chances, and asking questions; all of which are pivotal for learning, fostering resilience and creativity, and ultimately growth. Above all, these connections help me understand the strengths and possible barriers to learning for each of my pupils. As such, each lesson is catered to the specific, individual needs of the student to help them experience success and progress in their learning and personal development.
My lessons are for anyone in secondary school (ages 11-18) or studying at the college and university level. I primarily teach history and philosophy but have experience teaching Canadian, American and UK politics as well as religious studies. I can also offer services for learning English as an Additional Language (EAL) or essay writing and proofreading.
In my lessons, my hope is to leave students with more questions about the past, some answers about the present, ideas about the future, and above all a love of learning!

I can't say enough about how much Aaron helped my boys. Aaron was so attentive and patient with my high schoolers. He was incredibly professional, yet still managed to connect with them in a way that kept them engaged. After working with Aaron, I noticed a big boost in their confidence, which was great to see. We were really thankful for his support!
He has a strong capacity to explain things in a way that his students always understand. He’s very patient and truly cares about what he does, he’s always eager to help, and wants to ensure every student learns and succeeds.
