Find out more about Louis

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in tutoring during high school when I found myself naturally helping classmates understand complex concepts, especially in maths and science. I realised I had a knack for simplifying tricky ideas and enjoyed seeing others succeed because of it. After graduating with a 97 ATAR and strong results in Specialist Maths, Methods, Chemistry, and Italian, tutoring became a way to pass on what I'd learned and support students in building confidence.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I tutor Specialist Maths, Maths Methods, Chemistry, Biology, and Italian. I enjoy diving deep into problem-solving strategies, exam technique, and breaking down abstract concepts into manageable steps. In chemistry, I especially love reaction pathways and stoichiometry, while in biology, I'm passionate about systems thinking and real-world medical connections. Italian is a joy to teach, particularly when helping students master grammar and improve fluency. I'd say rote memorisation topics are less exciting, but I find ways to make them stick through active recall and spaced repetition techniques.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, I had a brilliant Specialist Maths teacher in Year 12 who didn't just teach the curriculum but really taught us how to think. He encouraged curiosity and made us believe we could tackle anything if we broke it down step by step. That approach has stuck with me and shapes how I teach today.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, clarity, adaptability, and empathy are essential. A good tutor knows how to explain concepts in multiple ways, reads the student's level and learning style, and builds trust so that the student feels comfortable asking questions. It's also about being passionate and genuinely caring about the student's progress.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During Year 12, I remember helping a friend who was really struggling with methods. We spent hours going over past exams and breaking down the logic behind every problem. By the end of the year, he improved dramatically, and seeing his face after getting his results was unforgettable. That moment confirmed for me how powerful tutoring can be-not just academically, but in restoring confidence.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

One challenge I faced early on was learning how to manage my time effectively between multiple high-demand subjects. It taught me the importance of structured study plans and smart revision strategies-tools I now pass on to my students. Another challenge was overcoming the fear of "getting it wrong" in maths, which I now actively work to remove from my students' mindset.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I'm passionate about helping young people see their potential-whether that's through tutoring, mentoring, or broader life skills like financial literacy. Teaching for me isn't just about content; it's about empowerment. I'm also passionate about medicine, having pursued a biomedicine degree with the goal of becoming a doctor one day.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

I bring a strong academic background, years of experience, and a genuine passion for helping students succeed. I tailor my lessons to each student's needs, provide flexible lesson formats (in-person or online), and always go beyond just homework help-I offer exam tactics, mindset coaching, and mentorship. I'm invested in my students' journeys, and I think that dedication is what makes the difference.
