About Emma

I studied at Exeter and Essex universities, and have an MA in Shakespeare Studies. Since graduating I've worked in theatres across the country and performed around the world.

I've worked frequently at the Royal Shakespeare Company and Shakespeare's Globe chiefly as an actor, but also as a director and teacher. I've played many Shakespeare parts including Beatrice, Lady Macbeth, Jaques, Imogen, Titania and Juliet. I've also performed Chekov and Ibsen, and in many new plays including most recently Cowbois by Charlie Josephine (RSC/Royal Court) and Punch by James Graham (Nottingham Playhouse/Young Vic).

I've run playreading groups for many years, and worked with a children's theatre charity.

I've also worked on several BBC TV shows (including Father Brown, Holby and Casualty), performed in short and feature films, read poetry on Radio 4 and recorded audiobooks.

About the lesson

I’ve worked as an actor for over twenty years, mostly in theatre in venues across England and performing around the world. I have directed and taught at Shakespeare's Globe, and am passionate about working with people to bring them confidence in their exploration of plays and poetry. What's wonderful is that this can be for so many reasons; college, university, drama school, a reading at a wedding, or professional auditions.

The best performance is playful, and this comes from preparation and confidence: I can help with both of these elements to help you feel a greater sense of freedom and creativity.

I can coach for auditions or self tapes, performance exams, general acting technique, to deepen your academic understanding of classical texts , or help your confidence with Shakespeare plays, whether for professionals, those in education or just your own enjoyment.

AUDITIONS
If you're preparing for drama schools auditions, general meetings, open auditions or other performance entrance exams, the trap can be to go over your pieces so often that you become completely set in your way of "doing the speech". This can mean you feel locked - it's hard to be playful or show your full potential. We can go through your scenes or speeches together to help you feel more open, free, and confident when you walk into the room.

I can also help you find a piece that's right for you, if you're not feeling you're really showcasing your ability and breadth of your creativity. We can then carefully work through the pieces so you feel fully prepared, relaxed and open to play.

COACHING
People come to acting at various times in their life for myriad reasons. Whether you're an experienced actor who just feels a bit stuck, if you're performing for the first time and feel you'd like some extra help, or if you've a favourite Shakespeare speech or sonnet you'd like to be able to recite, we can work together to unlock your abilities and give you a deeper confidence.

This training can take whatever form suits you; we can do one-hour for a burst of confidence when the time is right, or work on a whole programme that will help you reach your intended goal.

Some things I can help with are, text analysis, character work, voice, movement, self-taping and audition technique, Shakespeare (comprehension or performance), but these aren't exclusive. If you have any questions drop me a line and we can see if there's a way for us to work together.
