About Xingyu
I am an actuarial science and statistics double major in the University of Waterloo's Faculty of Mathematics. I've been tutoring high school math and physics for three years. I have had students go from failing math to passing with B's and even A's.

I have an improvement and result based approach. My goal for my students is to leave each lesson having improved or learned at least one skill. I also focus on inspiring self confidence and instilling a desire to improve within my students, and I have seen my long term students go from struggling and failing in their math courses in previous grades to enjoying and excelling at math. My goal as a tutor is not simply to teach math. Anyone who's excelled in a math course can turn around and teach the math concepts. My goal is to change the student's perspective of their own abilities and teach them to not fear the effort needed to strive for excellence. I don't settle for mediocrity, but I respect my students' needs. I understand that math does not come naturally to most people, and as someone who came close to failing math until the last years of high school, and then becoming a math student at the top math university in the country, I have a first hand understanding of the process of not just learning a particular math concept, but becoming holistically good at math.

I have known Xingyu since our first year in University. We were in a particularly difficult algebra and formal proof course and we were all studying together in the residence commons one night. Someone who was studying the same course, but alone, was struggling with a particularly abstract concept, and asked to join our group for some added insight. Xingyu taught him the concept in great detail and with deceptive simplicity that didn't compromise the completeness of the concept, even I felt my own understanding increased from overhearing Xingyu's explanation. but that wasn't it: we found out later that the other student had been struggling a lot and planned on dropping the course, and now, he had decided to stay in the course. The course was a degree requirement and a prerequisite to many of the upper level courses, so this meant that if he had dropped the course, he would essentially have had to switch programs.
