About Jack
What I find that most students find troubling in math and physics is that they simply don't "make any sense". As someone who spent quite a lot of time feeling the same during high school, I can understand just how unsettling it is to see random collections of letters and numbers passing as formulas. Most teachers, for whatever reason, don't seem to dive into what it is that these formulas mean, as much as they are concerned with how they are used. I'm not really sure if that's the best for deep learning.
To get mastery over a subject, I believe the key lies in understanding the foundations to the point that the complicated stuff is just the next logical progression - not a wild and blind leap. Once the fundamentals are in place, everything else follows (including grades).
My teaching puts this into practice, as I work on cementing the fundamental concepts to the level that the end formula would be staring you in the face before you know it.
