The way I teach varies from student to student. For instance, if I am teaching a student his or her first private lesson, I would ask them to play basic scales and have them sight read a song or two and possibly have them prepare 2 songs in advance of our first lesson just to guage their level. From that point I will cater their lessons accordingly. If it is a complete beginer, I would usually start them off with theory and ear training and work their way up to playing the saxophone. For Groups I usually start classes with Theory and Ear Training, and then move on to playing repetoire/scaler exercises afterward.
