About Kay
Hi, I'm Kay!
I'm a 29 year old, half-Japanese girl who is experienced in teaching basic Japanese. I first began teaching English in Japan to 6-12 years old children in five different primary schools and had over 1800 students. Although I was not fluent in Japanese at the time, the year that I spent working and staying with my family really boosted up my level in the language. This motivated me to finally take the plunge to go to university and learn my "second" language, and have recently graduated at SOAS University of London for my BA Japanese degree.
During my time in Japan, I kept my lessons consistently fun but with a good learning structure. Using games, flashcards, observational props and weekly quizzes, I made sure that the students' attention was on the subject and that they were enjoying the lesson. I believe that having fun whilst learning is one of the key aspects to a child's education. Although I have not had much experience tutoring 1 on 1, I am excited to adapt the knowledge and experience that I have already obtained to help children take another step forward in their education.
I would like to request that parents/potential students message me before booking a lesson, so that I can discuss the student's level with them before confirming a lesson date.
Thank you and I look forward to teaching you Japanese!

I’ve been taking weekly lessons with Kay for just over 6 months now and highly recommend her. She was very patient when I started as I was a complete beginner and felt she struck a good balance between challenging me to improve but not advancing too quickly so that I struggled to understand. Her teaching style is quite relaxed and informal, which suited me well as I’ve often found tutors can be rather patronising, and I particularly liked the selection of games and exercises she’d designed herself, they made getting to grips with such alien concepts a lot easier. I recommend her fully to anybody like me beginning to learn the language as I’ve found our time together very useful, and though I can’t speak for students who start at a higher level, I’ve no doubt that she’d be equally excellent for them aswell.
