About Rory
With over 10 years of experience, I’ve worked across a wide range of genres including electronic, hip-hop, RnB and jazz, both as a performer and producer. My work has involved collaboration with artists and musicians such as James Dring (Gorillaz, Blur, Lana Del Rey), Bobby Goulder (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra), Liam Toon (Miles Kane, Slowthai), Lewis Moody (Nubiyan Twist, Energy Exchange Records), and Nathan Challinor (Baby Queen, Milo Clare).
Alongside studio work, I’ve performed in theatre productions and toured across the UK and Europe. These experiences have given me a strong understanding of both the creative and professional sides of being a working musician — from performance and collaboration to adapting quickly in different musical environments.
In addition to my performance and production work, I am a Senior Music Mentor with Key Changes, a London-based music mental health charity. Over the past five years, I’ve supported emerging artists in developing their songwriting, production and performance skills, helping them build both confidence and creative direction.
I bring this real-world experience into my teaching, focusing not only on technical ability, but also on musical understanding, creativity and confidence. My aim is to help students become well-rounded musicians who understand how to express themselves and develop their own voice.

My teaching is always tailored to the individual student rather than following a fixed method or curriculum. Every student comes in with different goals, so lessons are built around what you want to achieve and how you learn best.
Some students prefer a structured, step-by-step approach with clear progression. Others want to focus on specific songs, techniques or creative projects. Most benefit from a combination of both, and I adapt lessons accordingly.
A key part of my approach is making music theory and technique practical. Rather than treating theory as something separate, I connect it directly to real music so it becomes useful in playing, writing and understanding songs.
Lessons can include:
Bass technique, groove and musicianship
Music theory in a practical, easy-to-apply way
Ear training and listening skills
Improvisation and creativity
Songwriting and composition
Music production and recording
Learning songs and understanding how they work
Developing effective practice routines
My focus is always on helping students become more confident, independent musicians who understand what they are playing and why.
Typical lesson length
Lessons are typically 60 minutes. This allows enough time to work on technique, apply ideas in a musical context, and set clear, manageable goals for practice between sessions.
Experience as a tutor
I am a working music producer and bassist based in East London with experience performing, writing and producing music across different styles.
Alongside my own musical work, I teach regularly and work with a wide range of students, helping them develop both practical playing skills and a deeper understanding of music.
Who the lessons are for
I teach students of all ages and levels, including:
Complete beginners with no prior experience
Self-taught musicians who feel stuck or lack direction
Intermediate and advanced bass players
Adult learners returning to music
Children and teenagers
Songwriters and composers
Music producers looking to strengthen their musical foundations
No previous experience is required — lessons are always adapted to your level and goals.
First lesson
The first lesson is a chance to get to know each other and understand what you want to achieve.
We’ll look at your current experience, your musical interests, and your goals — whether that’s learning songs, improving technique, understanding theory, or developing your own music.
From there, we’ll build a simple and realistic plan to help you move forward with confidence.
