About Joshua

My name is Joshua and I have travelled here from Britain after completing my Mathematics degree back home and am now based in the Gold Coast!

Mathematics is such an important topic to understand at least to some degree, unfortunately it cannot be ran from. Whether it's organising your finances/expenditures or understanding how interest rates work for your mortgage or even putting up a shelf, mathematics is essential to get on in life. It's also interwoven into everything you can see in this world, be it the cyclic rotation of the earth or its orbit around the sun, the rhythmic nature of music or even the way a wave curls and crashes, mathematics is everywhere!

During university I tutored other students on my course to help with their studies, and there is no greater feeling than working with someone on a problem until they understand and solve it. It also taught and reinforced my own understanding of mathematics, whether it be an alternative route to a problem or just understanding the material a bit better.

My most enjoyed branch of mathematics is definitely calculus. It has helped humanity massively in physics and engineering being able to figure out rates of change of any variable such as time, temperature or direction. At higher levels, this is applied to vector calculus in order to figure out or provide a general solution to the change in a vector quantity. This was actually something I used in my dissertation in Fluid Mechanics through the use of partial derivatives. What is most alluring about these methods is just how complex the calculations can get, it is certainly satisfying to get to a final solution after pages of calculations!

Mathematics has always fundamentally interested me, partially because of it's complexity but also because there is a method to the madness. I remember being quite frustrated at school when I didn't understand something, but sometimes you need to look at the problem from a different perspective. Some of you may be wanting to pursue mathematics further and are looking at higher level maths thinking there's no way! However, what you're learning now are the building blocks to higher level maths and when the time comes, you'll surprise yourself with what you can do.

Even if you do not wish to pursue mathematics further and think "when will i ever use pythagorean theorem?", which is probably true, learning these methods and problem solving skills will help massively with training your brain to solve problems in the real world!

Being able to help people understand and even find a passion for mathematics, to see just how important it really is, that's my goal. I hope to share this journey with you!

Whilst at university, I tutored a number of other students to assist with their studies and since then have achieved a first class degree in mathematics.

My methodology/techniques include breaking problems down into their constituent parts and ensuring a base knowledge of said parts in order to understand the problem and solve it.

Everyone learns and understands in different ways, therefore it is essential to be open to approaching problems in multiple ways in order for students to successfully tackle any problem they find.
