I like to get a good understanding of a persons personality, interests, strengths and weaknesses before I focus on one method of teaching. This usually means that I adapt according to one's learning style. For example with math homework I would prefer to do the first one or two questions with the child going step by step slowly showing the child exactly what to do and then letting the child try on their own. I find this approach to be the most effective as children usually have a general idea of the concept however are only missing or forgetting a few steps, specifically with mathematics. I also like to take breathing breaks especially when I feel like a child is not getting a concept or is frustrated. I like to form a bond with the student I'm working with and so if possible I like to relate school content to real life situations or ask them to link things to their life experiences and that way I get to know the child better. I am extremely patient and don't mind preparing a little extra work if need be for the child to practice in their own time.
I am a BSc Specialization second year student in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at the University of Alberta. I have been tutoring since 10th grade in high school - so around 4 years now. I am an enthusiastic, friendly tutor with a passion for education and love for children. I am incredibly patient and understanding of what it is to struggle with different concepts. I use multiple ways to teach and explain concepts as clearly and as slowly as need be. I have great reading, written and communication skills and I'm a positive, joy filled person. My last tutoring position was at Kenilworth School Edmonton, AB through Frontier College where I helped grade 7's and 8's with both numeracy and literacy and saw between 75% to 80% improvement at the end of the academic year in each student.
