About Philip
I discovered a talent for languages from quite a young age. I did well in French and Latin from age 10 onwards, but at age 13 I decided to teach myself German. There was no teaching of German at my school, but despite this the school allowed me to teach myself, and I did this successfully, achieving A grades at O and A level. I gained a scholarship to Cambridge University, offering French and German as my languages. At university I took up Russian and spent a year studying in Germany and a month in the Soviet Union. I graduated in Modern Languages with a first-class degree, but over the years of my professional life, many of which I spent abroad as an expatriate, I have continued to use languages in my daily work and read in them on a daily basis. Competence in languages is rewarding in itself, but it also provides a huge boost to academic success and future employability.

I teach both adults and children from beginner to advanced level. I prepare children in Years 4-8 for Common Entrance or senior school entry; Years 9-13 for GCSE, IGCSE, A-level and IB examinations. For adults I tailor courses according to starting level and goals.
Students will learn to speak, read and write the language confidently and correctly. In this way high grades can be achieved and the language becomes a tool for life and a doorway to the enjoyment of another culture.
My approach is to lay a firm foundation in grammar and syntax and build vocabulary and the ability to express oneself in the language from Day One. I base myself on the official course curriculum but aim to go well beyond it. Between lessons I ask students to complete short homework assignments to reinforce learning.
Lessons are held at my home in Ascot, Berkshire or in some cases online.
