About James
My name is James and I am a 26-year-old PhD student at the University of Cambridge. My degree is in physics, and I currently research how we can make batteries better by using new and interesting materials - this means I have a wide range of knowledge across maths, physics and chemistry. Having broad knowledge across subjects is helpful because linking concepts across topics is a great way to deepen subject understanding. Inter-disciplinary work is at the heart of modern science, so building up a mindset for unifying ideas can be helpful not just for exams, but also for life after them! I like my lessons to be led by the students, so I always work on things that will be best for them. Learning content for exams can be tedious, so I try to promote a curious mindset by engaging with any questions that students have - especially the ones that go beyond the examinable content! Talking through these 'stretching' questions is a great way to make the actual content seem much easier.

I have 4 years' experience as a private tutor, and over 9 years' experience working in teaching settings. I particularly enjoy teaching A-level physics and maths, but am also available for key stage 3 maths and science. I usually plan for 60-minute lessons, but am happy to work around the availability and preferences of each student. I believe that learning happens best when lessons are driven by curiosity, so I encourage open discussion during lessons to fuel interest in the subject. Broader discussions which go beyond the examinable content can be a great way to give context to the subject and make the course feel easier. That said, I believe that practising past paper questions is the only real way to learn how to improve exam technique, so my lessons run on a blend of practice questions and in-depth discussion. The best sessions feel more like a guided conversation than a lesson!
