About Joe

I've spent my adult life hopping back and forth between jobs where I made games, and jobs where I taught others how to make games and other media. In my spare time, I like making music, cooking, and long walks.

About the lesson

I'm a game *designer*, not a software programmer, so our focus will be on "finding the fun" and learning how games are made in industry, with less of a focus on technology. In our first lesson we'll find out where you already are in your software of choice - or (ideally) look at some projects you're already working on. From there, we'll make a customed learning schedule with take-away exercises fine-tuned to match your interests with what you need to learn next! The technological platforms I can help you to work in include: Scratch, GameMaker Studio 2 [a great starting place for 2D games], UEFN [Unreal Engine for Fortnite], Roblox, RpgMaker, RenPy, and Twine.

I also have a BA degree in Cultural Studies, and a PhD too. So I can help with whatever Art, Design, Media or Literature course you are currently taking, from GSCE, to A-Level or BTEC, all the way up to degree level. Over my career I have made music, films, animation, music videos etc. and can show you the basic process for most forms of media-making. I believe that good creatives are rounded people, so I am happy to take on Art and Design or Design and Technology students who wish to mix tuition in their school/college/university subject with a separate passion area (like game design or visual art).

If you want advice on developing your skillset and portfolio so that you work in games or another creative industry someday - then I'm your person!

Not all my colleagues would have been up for designing a life-sized game board called 'Save Kent From Dracula'. But offering to talk us all through it in a village church - armed only with a box of plastic bats - took immersive teaching to a whole new level. Our rector still talks about it. Tutored by Joe for a year or two, and couldn't recommend more. He's up there with the best tutors I've ever had , doesn't make you feel stupid if you don't understand something. Can take a concept into a abstract view if it helps you see what , how or why it is. Likes to have a laugh and joke but does stay on track and teach you at the same time ,little bit quirky and just great. Couldn't recommend enough
