About Sarah

Hello! My name is Sarah, and I worked as an assistant language teacher (ALT) in Tottori Prefecture, Japan. During my 3 years living and working in Japan, I invested in studying Japanese under a private tutor in addition to independent study. I was able to learn how to speak Japanese very well up to working proficiency, and I would love to help you do the same! I have extensive knowledge of Japanese culture and etiquette thanks to my time living there, so I can help you in this regard whether you are living in Japan or are preparing to go there. I have experience teaching English language to elementary schoolers, junior high students, and adult students. So, I am happy to teach you whatever your level!

About the lesson

During my 3 years in Japan, the best way that I studied was under a private Japanese tutor - and I would love to pay that forward and help other people learn Japanese, too! I like to use the exceptional Genki textbook and accompanying workbook to help you study. I also think that having natural conversations in Japanese is a wonderful way to pick up new words that you will use in your daily life. I have extensive knowledge of Japanese culture, business etiquette, and tea ceremony, so I am happy to teach you about these things as well. I focus mainly on speaking and functioning in Japanese, so I will not require you to learn kanji, though I am happy to provide study materials if that is something you wish to focus on. I am happy to tutor from pure beginner to intermediate levels!

My lessons will adapt to your goals. A typical base lesson with me will include a section where we learn new vocabulary and grammar, then a section where we practice speaking, followed by a section where we practice listening. Finally, we will practice having a natural conversation using the new words we learned. Optionally, I will assign you some questions to write about in Japanese for me to check during our next lesson. I also like to incorporate games and fun practice activities whenever possible, to help you enjoy learning the language! Our lessons will adapt and change shape over time based on your goals and how you learn.
