About Austin

I am a professional cellist in Toronto, currently the Assistant Principal cellist for Ontario Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Cellist for Etobicoke Philharmonic Orchestra. I graduated from University of Toronto with a Bachelor's Degree in Cello Performance, and then went to Mannes New School of Music in New York and graduated with a Master's Degree in Cello Performance. I have studied under many great teachers, including Joseph Elworthy, the president and CEO of Vancouver Academy of Music, under Shauna Rolston, head of the string department of University of Toronto and a great soloist, and under Ronald Thomas, an American cellist and professor at Mannes New School of Music. I have done many performances in New York, Toronto, and Taiwan. These performances include solo performances, chamber music, and orchestras including Garden State Philharmonic, University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and played with Martha Graham company for Rite of Spring. I was the Performance Head of ECCHO, a charity group at University of Toronto, which is responsible for organizing concerts and gathering performers, and being a performer myself. I have over 10 years of experience in teaching, and have taught students of all ages. Besides my current orchestra positions, I also have 35 students, many who are doing RCM exams. I am a strict and very responsible teacher who makes sure to teach everything I know to my students, and providing many performance opportunities for my students.

Our first lesson I like to understand where the student's playing level is at. After I get a good understanding, I will start preparing the proper pieces and exercises for the student to play and learn. I understand that every student is different and the way each and every student learns is different. I will make sure the student is not only learning and progressing, but also having lots of fun. After all, music should be enjoyable.

  • 1. When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I began piano when i was age 4 or 5. Ever since, I fell in love with music.
  • 2. What makes you passionate about your subject?

Music is such a wonderful art form. There are so many instruments, each with their own unique sound, not to mention countless different genres of music. I love music because of how diverse it is, and how it is an art form that allows the musician to freely express themselves in their own unique way. And of course, music sounds good and is just a lot of fun to play.
  • 3. What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I love tutoring because I like sharing my knowledge and passion to others. I also really enjoy helping others in any way.
  • 4. Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes. Every music teacher I had are my role models. They helped me grow into the musician I am today. Without them, I wouldn't have the set of skills I have today.
  • 5. What are your keys to success?

Practice is definately a key to success. It doesn't matter how good a teacher is, if you do not do your own work and apply the knowledge.
Dedication is another. You must be dedicated in learning music. If you give up half way, you won't be able to learn much.
Finally, have fun! Music should be enjoyable!! This is so important. Having fun and enjoying music, will make playing and learning music so much better!
