About Colin

From an early age, I have loved to play Scottish & Celtic fiddle music.

Combined with a love of travel, my violin goes everywhere I travel in the world, including the US, Europe, Canada and Australia.

Hence the approach to teaching online to facilitate consistency of teaching.

One of my favourite outcomes from a lesson is for a student or group of students to have fun and enjoy a truly wonderful creative enabler, that of playing the violin and learning to play Scottish/ Celtic fiddle by ear.

About the lesson

I'm Colin from Scotland and have been playing Scottish & Celtic Fiddle for over 40 years.

Lesson Length - Teaching Methodology
===============================

Lessons usually last about an hour.

The focus is on playing by ear so that the student developsthe skills of playing music in their own voice and from the heart.

Lessons usually include stories, a bit of history behind the tune and depending on the skill level or what we choose to focus on, might include techniques & decorations.

The overall aim of a lesson is to have fun!

Qualifications/ Experience as a Tutor
==============================

I have Grade 8 Distinction Violin and this has helped to develop a tone of playing in the Scottish fiddle style of the 1700s and 1800s.

Between 2007 and 2015, I organised the Celtic Electives at the annual Launceston Youth & Community Orchestra String Camps in Tasmania, Australia.

Whilst in Australia from 2004 - 2018, aswell as teaching & running Celtic fiddle workshops., I also played in Celtic bands which appeared at the major Celtic Festivals in Australia.

I also run have run fiddle workshops in the US and more recently played at the Mississippi Renaissance Festival and Salado Highland Games, Texas.

More recently, fiddle lessons and music sessions have been run online from Scotland.

Highlights of teaching & playing Celtic Fiddle by ear

Seeing a young boy's eyes light up after he had his first violin lessons in a Kroger supermarket in the US

Playing some Celtic fiddle tunes in a plane flying over Mt. Everest at 33,000 feet in 2017

Hearing a group of musicians of all ages play some of the tunes we had learnt in a workshop.
