When students and teachers interact within an emotionally secure and intellectually
stimulating learning environment, personal growth occurs. In my fifteen years of
teaching, I am very much convinced that students need to be able to make this
connection in order for effective learning to be achieved. In pursing this goal, I develop
materials that cater to a wide variety of student learners; from those who struggle with
sequence and patterning, to those who want to extend the lesson into a “real life”
scenario. One such example is termed as a “scrapbook” page that is used within the
context of a reading passage; whether fictional or non-fictional. A large piece of paper is
divided up ahead of time by myself, into various sections that provide ample space for
student writing, using a variety of relevant media images, shapes and clearly defined
boundaries. The student has the use of a limited amount of topic or character choices,
preset by myself, and uses personal experience, imagination, prior knowledge,
organizational skills and logical predictions for the passage.
I have 18 years of teaching experience with students aged 2 to 25 years old. I teach to a broad range of student needs from Autism spectrum, ADHD, and hearing impairments. I have professional teaching certifications from both Quebec and Ontario in Canada.
