About Megan

I’m Megan, a research scientist with a PhD in theoretical and computational chemistry from Southern Methodist University and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and chemistry from Rhodes College. My work combines chemistry, mathematics, and computational methods, and I enjoy helping students make sense of subjects that can initially feel intimidating.

My teaching experience includes serving as a chemistry teaching assistant at SMU and a mathematics teaching assistant at Rhodes College, along with individual tutoring for students in grades 3–11. I have supervised chemistry laboratory sections and graded assignments, giving me experience supporting students and evaluating their understanding. Alongside teaching, I have published scientific research and delivered more than 20 oral and poster presentations, including at national chemistry and physics meetings.

I want students to feel comfortable asking questions and being honest about what they find confusing. You can expect clear communication, thoughtful preparation, and explanations suited to your current understanding. Whether you are building foundational skills or studying challenging college material, I will take your questions seriously and work with you toward your goals.

My goal is to help students understand the material and feel more confident working through problems independently. I break complex ideas into manageable steps, explain the reasoning behind equations, and connect abstract concepts to concrete examples. Depending on the topic, we may use diagrams, worked examples, or practice problems. I welcome questions and adjust my explanations when a different approach would be more helpful.

A typical lesson begins with a brief discussion of what you are studying, your goals, and where you are getting stuck. We review the relevant concepts and work through an example together. Then, you try a similar problem with guidance, explaining your reasoning as you go. We finish by reviewing the main ideas and identifying what would be most useful to practice next. Sessions can focus on understanding course material, working through challenging homework concepts, or preparing for an exam.

I bring a PhD in theoretical and computational chemistry, a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and chemistry, and experience as a researcher, teaching assistant, and individual tutor. Supervising chemistry laboratory sections and grading assignments has given me experience evaluating students’ work and explaining scientific concepts. My research background also allows me to show how chemistry and mathematics are used to answer real scientific questions.

I offer support for middle school and high school mathematics, as well as high school and undergraduate chemistry and mathematics. Topics include algebra, precalculus, calculus, general chemistry, and physical chemistry. Lessons are tailored to your course, current understanding, and goals, whether you need help strengthening foundational skills or tackling more advanced material.
