About Paul
Before I retired recently, I had been a Chinese teacher, broadcasting journalist, writer, translator and interpreter. My mother tongue is Cantonese and my father tongue is Mandarin. I have a bachelor degree in Sociology which was taught in English and studied French Studies in York University.

Learning Chinese is quite different from learning other languages. Since there are many apps and social media teaching Chinese for free nowadays, it would not be a bad idea to check them out first. Only when you are really interested and do have an aptitude in learning this language, then some practice in conversations and writings with a tutor will become necessary and beneficial. For young people, I strongly recommend learning to write and read in Chinese at the same time, otherwise, learning to speak first is also a good start.
