About Karina
Hi there! I am an International Relations graduate (having also spent one year at Waseda University of Tokyo), a former senior researcher, and am currently pursuing continued studies in Cognitive Science, Linguistics, and Philosophy at the University of Toronto. I have been in the practice of tutoring for nearly 6 years now. Formally, I hold a JLPT N2 certification. I'm very passionate about education, especially teaching Japanese, English (particularly in the academic setting), and math, and totally enjoy doing so!

I approach teaching a language in the same way I approach learning one: through simple logic and understanding, and by intentionally utilising what we know about the brain and language. Learning languages is a hobby of mine (I'm communicative in about 5 languages at this point), and by way of these experiences, I've found that language-learning as a general skill, as opposed to simply Japanese-learning or Korean-learning for example, can be more cunningly strengthened and mastered.
I'm eager to share with you how one can learn languages effectively!
As a student, my research interests lie largely within the areas of Cognitive Science, the interdisciplinary study of the mind and brain, and Psycholinguistics, the field that examines the relationship between our psychological attributes and our linguistic behaviour. Drawing from these perspectives, my aim is for us to build on both your Japanese skills as well as your ability to learn a foreign language. Simply put, I'm going to help you put to use what we know about cognition and language as well!
That being said, I also find that learning Japanese can also be incredibly enjoyable, and because of this, I like to think our lessons will be fun. We will inevitably cover topics of culture, as they pervade the Japanese lexicon.
Our lessons will be a safe space, and my teaching style will likely change to suit your styles of learning. I commonly begin with verbal ability, building a solid foundation for the sounds that exist in the Japanese language. We would then move on to Japanese writing systems should that suit the student, particularly Hiragana and Katakana (if we work together, I'll tell you why!). I also highly recommend a particular textbook, which will serve as the basis for the core of our lessons. Finally, certain days will be dedicated simply for relaxed communication in a leisurely setting so as to not lose sight of the overall goal of simply being able to communicate in and comprehend Japanese. My lessons are intended for students of all ages. Cheers, and I hope to hear from you!
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by the teacher's students.
Perfect! Karina is a brilliant teacher of the Japanese language. Furthermore, she focuses on how the brain actually retains information and learns new dialects. Her classes are very organized and focused, with special care to establishing meaning and relations to the language to allow for better memory recall. I would go as far to say she is one of the best teachers I have ever had. I highly recommend taking her classes.
