About Caelum
I'm a computer science and music double major at Simmons University. I'm a junior with 3 semesters left, including Spring 2021. In the past, I've tutored and mentored many children; my experience includes tutoring kids in 3rd grade through 8th grade on the violin and 2nd grade and 3rd grade in math, reading, elementary science, and homework help. I love love love working with elementary aged kids, but I am open to tutoring anyone, as long as they want to learn to code!

My teaching approach is mainly personalized learning. Computer science doesn't come naturally to everyone, but I believe each person can (sometimes with help) find a way to take ideas and topics they already understand and connect them to computer science principles. This applies to many subjects; for example, many people who don't find reading easy can find enjoyment and make progress when they find books they like. Similarly, computer science covers many topics and if someone is interested more in english and libraries, perhaps learning about databases and how libraries are organized might appeal to their interests.
My lessons are mainly geared toward students who need supplemental help in a class they are taking outside of this website. The lesson structure for day one can include an overview of what the student does understand vs. what they need help understanding, a discussion about which topics should be covered when, and making a plan for finishing any projects due in their class.
While the content of each tutoring session may vary depending on the content the student's teacher assigns, there are several techniques that I like using to help students understand Java. One technique I find helpful is using block-coding like Scratch to help students understand the basic building blocks of programming. In addition, I like to use diagrams to illustrate different types of data structures.
