About Bernard

Hello! I'm Bernard, a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Computer Science department at Trent University. I work with university students every week, helping them understand hard ideas, answering their questions, and giving feedback on their work.

I've been teaching for years. I hold a Bachelor of Education in Economics and Geography from the University of Cape Coast, where I trained as a teacher and studied educational psychology. I also have a Master of Science from the University of Hohenheim in Germany and a background in computer science. My degrees in economics and computing used a lot of mathematics, including calculus, statistics, and problem solving, so I use these skills every day, not just in the classroom.

I've also been a teaching assistant at the University of Cape Coast, marking assignments and exams. That taught me exactly where students lose marks and how to help them avoid those mistakes.

I'm patient, reliable, and organized. I respect my students' time, arrive prepared, and set clear goals for every lesson. Most of all, I enjoy watching a student go from "I don't get it" to "Oh, that's easy!"

About the lesson

I teach mathematics to students who want to understand the subject, not just memorize steps. My main areas are algebra, functions, trigonometry, and calculus (limits, derivatives, integrals, and their applications, etc).

My approach: I start by finding out what you already know and where you get stuck. Many problems in trigonometry or calculus come from small gaps in earlier topics, so I fix those first. I explain each idea in plain language, use diagrams and graphs to make it visual, and then work through examples with you step by step. After that, you solve problems yourself while I guide you, so you build real confidence.

A typical lesson:

A quick review of the last lesson and any homework questions
A clear explanation of the new concept, with visuals
Worked examples together
Practice problems you solve on your own, with feedback
A short summary and targeted practice for next time

What sets me apart: I'm patient, and I adapt to how you learn. I don't move on until the idea makes sense to you. I'm also a master's student in computer science.

Who the lessons are for: high school students, university students in first- and second-year math or calculus courses, and adults returning to math. I also help with exam preparation and homework support.
