I like taking an approach that is specific and dependant on each child meaning some lessons may be structured to the parents/guardians' judgement/desire, the child's immediate interest and my best judgement. I'm empathetic to students who experience bullying or lack a sense of belonging in school environments so I like to include activities and a sporting element that allows students to take a break, get moving, perhaps create something to take back home, grow/strengthen their creativity and ultimate recharge their mind and confidence so they leave each session, not with not only an improved competency for the task but a pride in themselves and a productivity that can potentially extend to their intuition. I believe when a child is more fulfilled in themselves, they tackle hurdles more effectively, seeking alternatives and are able to construct their own personal motivation to accomplishing things.
I am to achieve minimum 3 different outcomes specific to the task, do homework run throughs, and goal orientated sessions to encourage students to reflect on their work, problem solving and their sense of self in order to keep a consistency in their motivation to complete and achieve what they come to me for assistance with.
I like to ask guardians to provide a checklist of expectations they would like to be met and a little information on the attitude and personality of a child so lessons can be structured most effectively from an immediate stand-point of the child's needs/interests/dislikes.
For older children and university students, such things could occur in a more casual, level-playing field environment where we just chat about expectations and work on solutions for them together. Perhaps even share a little about each other that is relevant to the progress in order to create a safe, understanding space as high education can get quite stressful.
I am a university student with extensive experience in the sporting industry as an athlete and as an assistant coach for netball. I have played and trained across a variety of sports including Netball, ultimate frisbee, tennis, and outdoor recreation but was raised playing football, cricket and swimming (bronze star completed at a very young age). I love little things and finding/creating huge value from it which has helped me integrate other interests such as dance, art, movies/TV and english into my high school and university studies.
