About Alisa

Hello! I’m Alisa, a Deaf American Sign Language (ASL) educator with over 20 years of teaching experience across high schools, homeschool programs, private tutoring, and online academies. I currently teach for a virtual education company from home, where I work with students from many backgrounds and skill levels. I’m passionate about ASL, Deaf culture, and empowering students to communicate confidently and respectfully. Over the years, many of my former students have continued into Deaf Studies programs and careers in interpreting, education, and community advocacy — something that brings me tremendous joy as a teacher.

About the lesson

My lessons are immersive, visual, and structured in a way that builds understanding step-by-step. I focus on: * Clear modeling of signs * Strong emphasis on ASL grammar (topic/comment, non-manual signals, WH-questions, Y/N questions) * Repetition with purpose — not memorizing, but understanding * Breaking down concepts into small, achievable steps * Real conversations and practical application * Encouragement, patience, and positive reinforcement Because I am Deaf, I offer students an authentic signing environment, helping them grow real everyday communication skills — not just vocabulary. A TYPICAL LESSON Each lesson includes: * Warm-up review (fingerspelling, vocabulary, or phrases) * New concept or vocabulary set introduced visually * Grammar explanation in a clear, accessible format * Interactive practice through short dialogues or guided signing * Student expressive practice (sentences, mini-stories, or personalized tasks) * Feedback + corrections * Short homework or practice prompt to reinforce learning Lessons are adapted for your level — from total beginners to advanced ASL students preparing for college or interpreting programs.
