About Betsy

I am a dedicated language educator with 28 years of comprehensive teaching experience and an unwavering passion for multilingual education. As a native English speaker, I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish and French along with a Master's Degree in Education, providing me with both linguistic expertise and pedagogical training. Currently, I serve as a language instructor at an independent elementary school in the Los Angeles area. My year-long immersive experience living in both Spain and France allowed me to develop native-level proficiency and deep cultural understanding. Beyond the classroom, I actively volunteer as a board leader for language teacher associations at the local, state, and national levels, where I design and deliver professional development programs and training workshops for fellow educators. I believe strongly in exposing students and teachers to the rich diversity of Spanish and French-speaking regions worldwide, fostering both linguistic competence and global cultural awareness while advancing the profession through mentorship and educational leadership.

About the lesson

First and foremost, I get to know my students and their interests, and this is what motivates me to guide students to create goals as we work together to customize lessons for them.

A typical lesson begins with a fun warm up activity (music, songs, food, and games), and then we dive into the core lesson content, and finally at the end of the lesson, we look at how we are meeting our goals and do a quick preview of what is to come.

I am big believer in making learning fun while ensuring my students are making progress and achieving their goals. I monitor progress closely and communicate to students and parents frequently.

While my focus has been elementary and middle school students for the past 14 years, I have also taught high schoolers. I specialize in teaching Spanish and French languages and culture, and have also taught English language learners.

I am a tech enthusiast, so if your child enjoys learning online, I can guarantee we'll discover some amazing tech tools to help them gain language skills! I was very successful in the transition to online learning and my students loved coming to class. In person, I love guiding students on a discovery of the amazing Spanish and French speaking cultures around the world while learning the language.

If your child is interested in learning about food and cooking- I specialize in cooking classes too. Students get their own passports as we learn about and create simple child-friendly recipes from a variety of regions around the world.

I think it is very important to learn about all regions of the world where these languages are spoken. Culture is just as important when learning a language. Come join me as we travel around the world!
